Battery consumption: initial observations?

i know it's probably way to early to start this discussion, but i figure crowd sourcing may yield some insights. in short, after very disappointing battery use, in particular smart watch mode endurance on my 945LTE, i have been hyperaware of how much battery use my 955 Solar is using. just overnight (8-9 hours), i was surprised to see it dropped 3-4%. it may be that the battery gauge is poorly calibrated, but so far, even though one would guess it has a larger battery than the 945LTE, i'm finding consumption not very different.

on the positive side, for my one activity so far, a 70 minute run with Multiband+All satellites, i used up 6% which right on target with spec. (basically zero sun since i ran before and just as the sun was coming up).

i'd love to hear other people's impressions and experiences as some of you have had the watch (just a bit ;) ) longer.

  • something is terribly wrong with your watch. the obvious thing to do is to contact Garmin, but as you do that, here are a couple trouble shooting things: turn off blue tooth and wifi and see what happens overnight. or max out the battery saver mode as much as you can (maybe keeping activity tracking but turning off BT, wifi). Pulseox should also be off, but even then, it should last more than 2 days. you situation is most unusual so its either a hardware issue or something particular with how it is connecting to your phone/garmin connect (just my wild guess)

  • Thanks "derek87".

    I will follow your good advices, Very much appreciated.

    Yes I had already completely turned off BT, Wifi, Notifications, backlight at 10%. etc... I am IT Professional.

  • man, that's really rough. only other wild ideas are to factory reset the watch, and if you are willing, see that if isn't configured or set up with your phone,  it uses a reasonable amount of battery overnight. your experience does not match the most of ours so its seems likely its a hardware issue. (you aren't entirely alone if you look at this thread)

  • Thanks, removing this data field solved the problem, the battery lasts at least a week.

  • My battery consumption has been 8-10% per day after using for 3 weeks.

    BT = always on

    spo2 = sleep only

    Watch face = stock

  • I have the 955 non-solar model. Daily, with smart notifications on, it drains only a few % (like 2-4%). During longer running activities, I have only used All+Multi-Band. For a 2-hour run, it drained about 20-25% without music. With music, it definitely drains a lot more. I use it with AirPods Pro if that matters.

    For screen brightness, I have it on 80% for activities, 20% for general use and 5% for sleep at night.

    For my watch face, I use a really minimal one with only battery percentage, date and weather.

  • Hi tvieso, how can you have the screen brightness 5% for sleep, as the lowest possible value is 10%?

  • Using the settings in the app you can set 5%

  • 3 weeks now and no difference with the new Beta 12.20

    smartwatch mode - minimal usage - no notification, Garmin watch face . 10% brightness and I loose 1% every 90 min !

  • Using the settings in the app you can set 5%

    Ok, you can (didn't noticed that earlier), but I can see no difference in actual display brightness for 5% and 10% settings. So it seems it is a bug in the app.
