Battery consumption: initial observations?

i know it's probably way to early to start this discussion, but i figure crowd sourcing may yield some insights. in short, after very disappointing battery use, in particular smart watch mode endurance on my 945LTE, i have been hyperaware of how much battery use my 955 Solar is using. just overnight (8-9 hours), i was surprised to see it dropped 3-4%. it may be that the battery gauge is poorly calibrated, but so far, even though one would guess it has a larger battery than the 945LTE, i'm finding consumption not very different.

on the positive side, for my one activity so far, a 70 minute run with Multiband+All satellites, i used up 6% which right on target with spec. (basically zero sun since i ran before and just as the sun was coming up).

i'd love to hear other people's impressions and experiences as some of you have had the watch (just a bit ;) ) longer.

  • Did you wake on the glance page or watch face?

Try disabling the touch screen during sleep.

I am using the default watch face. Did not encounter much drain.

  • thanks for your reply. Well, I"m using the default watch face, too. I disabled the touch screen today to see if it might help... Every morning I receive a report - may it be the reason for the battery to drain so much?

Didn't mention it - I reset the watch a couple of days ago, so maybe that's the reason for the watch to drain so quickly.

What do you mean? - Did you wake on the glance page or watch face?

  • I don't think morning report is the cause.

On your watch face, you can scroll down or up to see widgets or glance pages (HRV status, Training Readiness, etc).

If you don't disable touch screen, you may end up at the glance page the whole night which may drain battery.

  • Thanks for your clear response. I might have ended up after waking up with a glance page on.... I'm ready to observe if that is the culprit:)

  • I've had my 955 non-solar for exactly 2 weeks now and am very satisfied with battery life so far Slight smile

I initally charged it to 100% and it has the following battery usage pretty much every day:
Smartwatch only/Pulse Ox on Demand/Backlight Gesture only after sunset - turned off during the day and during sleep: 5%/day
1 GPS Activity of 30min with Multi+All Systems and the same settings as above: 10%/day
1 GPS Activity of 30min with All Systems, but NOT Multi: 7%/day
I tried the Pulse Ox during the night for a couple of days - didn't seem to drastically increase battery usage during the night. Normally it would use 2% without Pulse Ox and maybe 3% with Pulse Ox during the night. Although I have to say, those nights were rather short with only 5-6 hours sleep.

I used the Infocal reloaded Watchface during the whole 2 weeks.

This morning I had 15% left which is estimated by the watch to last for another 2 days - I guess it would last for even 3 more days if I only used it in Smartwatch mode during this time.

  • thanks for sharing. your experiences for Smartwatch mode match mine. i'm not sure how to read your GPS activity numbers. are you saying that for multi-band, if you did a 30min activity that day, you used an extra 5% (5+5=10% for the day)?

i have reliably seen about 3%/hour for All Satellites Runs//hikes. Multiband (Only used twice) burns about 6%/hour. i have the solar model so i may be getting a slight boost but most of my runs are early morning so i don't see tons of solar on many of them.

i like the Infocal, but some of the labels/numbers are too small for these old eyes. i'm reliably in the 5-6%/day range for several watch faces: Coros Apex Like (1hr sec and real time HR), Minimal Vertical 2 (1hz sec and real-time HR), Glance Pro (real time HR, seconds only on gesture).

  • Hi, yes for Multiband+all systems it uses another 5% for a 30min activity. Although I have to say, I did check the map and play around with it quite often during those 30 minutes because I'm still trying to figure a few things out. So, maybe it would be a little bit less if I left it alone more during the activity and only checked the map if really needed.

I also have the Coros Apex Like installed and will try that one for  the next two weeks. Still need to decide which watchface to keep permanently lol. Will have a look at the other 2 you mentioned, too. Maybe there's something I like even better :)

  • My watch is two weeks old and running on latest FW and all default settings . i have the watch running 5 days x 4 hours of trekking mode  and still with battery left. So-far I am a happy trooper.

  • I have the same observation.. may be bit worst.. I brought this one week back and initially charge was 84%. After six days it was around 40% and morning to evening dropped 2%.. Charged in the night and following day morning it was 96%.. and even less than two days with one work out for 30mins it has dropped to 77%.. quite different to 935 experience..

  • Hi, I purchased my 955 one week back, the battery is now 2 days max... losing 56% during the night, Having no BT, etc....rebooting the watch several times per day, and doing only 1 run of 10km each 2-3 days, the rest of the time working from home 10h seat on my chair.... So very disappointed of the Garmin Marketing.... OK nice feature but the 15h => impossible, even 5 days will make SUPER happy, but less than 2 days....

OK I understood I have to turn off ALL, even a total power off of the watch during the night to have more battery!!! But then, what is the point??

I was a BIG Garmin supporter, but thinking to return that product....

I purchased the Garmin running dynamics pod too with my 955, it is coming with a 1Y battery for 1h activity per day. The new RD pod I got => Battery dead.... I have ordered this special CR1632 battery 20 dollars that I cannot find anywhere at my local place, and now waiting..... But know I am stressed to connect it to the 955, it will drain even faster the battery.... I am So disappointed by Garmin...
