Battery consumption: initial observations?

i know it's probably way to early to start this discussion, but i figure crowd sourcing may yield some insights. in short, after very disappointing battery use, in particular smart watch mode endurance on my 945LTE, i have been hyperaware of how much battery use my 955 Solar is using. just overnight (8-9 hours), i was surprised to see it dropped 3-4%. it may be that the battery gauge is poorly calibrated, but so far, even though one would guess it has a larger battery than the 945LTE, i'm finding consumption not very different.

on the positive side, for my one activity so far, a 70 minute run with Multiband+All satellites, i used up 6% which right on target with spec. (basically zero sun since i ran before and just as the sun was coming up).

i'd love to hear other people's impressions and experiences as some of you have had the watch (just a bit ;) ) longer.

  • i dont have a good comparison for that because i don't know how equal the battery calibration is until the watch actually dies, but it does seem the 955 uses less battery (maybe because solar, and its always sunny here) when doing activities. idle is where theres a bigger diff in favor of the 935.

out of curiosity i tried to turn off backlight and touch for 24h after my last post, made zero diff in percentage draw (which is nice because i rely on backlight with the solar screen being a bit darker)

  • I've had a thought tonight as it's the first time I've noticed it as I accidentally left WiFi on. The watch periodically syncs the music on it over WiFi, maybe this could explain 20-30% drain some people were getting every so often through the night.

  • After I turned off the touchscreen, the battery drain improved noticeably.

I have to say that deactivating the touch screen helped a little. However, removing the RunningDF4 data field helped significantly.

  • I downloaded a data field screen named RunningDF4 this morning. After that my 955's battery lost 10% in just 2 hours. The problem was solved after removing that screen.

  • I have been an Android and Pixel phones user for a long time.

So battery drain problems have been regular thing to me. LOL

So I'm used to poor battery with Garmin.

  • have contacted garmin poland about

  • There is definitely something with the ciq apps that is causing this issue with a 3rd party sensor.

Ive initially had no issues with battery drain, with Stryd and HRM Pro (Stryd app and Stryd data field installed).

Last week, I totally removed the Stryd and the apps from the watch, as their workout app keeps crashing during a workout. I’ve been away on holiday, fully charged when I left, did 6 runs and a tracked walk, one with fully maps and navigation. 40% battery usage until Thursday (6 days). Installed the beta app for Stryd they asked me to test, re added the pod. Did the run Friday morning (40 minutes run). Got back finished the run, and 2 hours later, battery was down to 20%! Power reset the watch, and from last night to this morning, it was down to 12% battery.

charged the watch now I’m back, and from 100% down to 95% in less than an hour, with no activity.

removed both Stryd apps and the pod, and rebooted the watch, been for another 50 minute run with the HRM pro and the tempe pod attached, and still only down to 92% now.

  • Yes, it's been said multiple times already now...

ConnectIQ fields seem to keep running in the background after the activity is stopped. So when using one that connects to a sensor (stryd, hr strap) it will try to connect or connect all that time and thus cause a drain.

Restarting the watch or quickly firing up an activity without these custom connectiq fields fixes this. You can still use them, just remember to do this after each activity with them.

Can only hope garmin gets their software straight soon now because the amount of issues and lack of fixes is insane.

  • just wanted to share my experience so far:  had the watch for about 2 months so far, overall the battery lasts only about 5 days (smartwatch and no activities recorded) which is quite embarrassing in my opinion comparing to the 15 days advertised. I have contacted Garmin Poland for now about the issue, i am in progress of recording my watch logs with them and hopefully their engineering team will be able to do something about it but overall i am not happy so far and i would happily  switch to different watch , one of the reasons i bought the watch was that it should lasts those 15 - 20 days without charge but the reality is different...

  • same here... been using the solar version for more than a month. Recently I've restored it to the default settnigs (unhappy with the 7-8 days of usage before - mainly 1h runs every second day). After I woke up today, the watch drained about 15 % at night.... No idea what caused the problem. What is more, it happened two nights in a row.... What a shame to Garmin for its advertising policy - 15 days without a charge.... Yeah...

    Guys, any ideas?
