Forerunner 945 Dead After Swim – No Response

Hello,

I've been using my Garmin Forerunner 945 since 2022 and have been thoroughly satisfied with it. Especially over the past few months, during my intensive daily training for an Ironman, it has proven to be a reliable companion.

However, a few days ago, after a swim session, the screen suddenly went black. At first, I thought the battery had died, but even after connecting it to the charger, the watch remained completely unresponsive.

Today, I visited the Garmin store in Vienna. They tried the same steps I had already attempted: connecting the watch to the charger and testing all possible button combinations – but unfortunately, nothing happened. The device shows no signs of life. In the end, the staff told me they were unable to help and advised me to contact customer support.

Has anyone else experienced a similar issue? Or does anyone have an idea of what I could try?

Best regards,
Michael

  • Hi ! Apparently you need to contact a repair shop and find out what they say. Pressing buttons won't get you anywhere.

  • Hello,

If you have not yet, please contact your local support center for further help on a replacement. You can try the following in the mean time:

My Forerunner 945 Will No Longer Turn On

  • Hello guys,

I got in contact with the local support team - and i will get a new watch!

  • Hi I had almost the same, Garmin told me they don’t support or repair the device. Instead, they offered me a discount on a new watch, but only on the model Garmin chooses, not the one I want. I think it’s time to switch brands. In my opinion, they should either be able to repair it, or offer the customer a choice of product for which they can give a discount, as they are taking the older model in return. Otherwise, it feels like: ‘we’ll gladly sell you our product, but afterwards you’re on your own

Hi. What did they offer and what did you want?

  • If I have to buy a new one, I want to buy the newest version not older one. I was offered discount on the older one

  • Ok, you wanted a trade-in for the latest model. Apparently, it's selling well so far, they don't see the need.

  • Hi guys,

sorry to hear that you’re having the same issue…

I got in contact with Garmin support and they offered me two options:

    1. Send in my damaged 945 and get a refurbished Garmin 955 for about 150 euros.

    2. Send in my damaged 945 and buy a new Garmin watch from their store with a discount. The latest models weren’t included, and to be fair, the discount wasn’t that great.

I went with option 1 – but asked if I could get the Garmin 955 Solar instead of the regular 955. They agreed, and for about 10 euros more I received the Solar version. The refurbished watch looks and works exactly like new, and I’m really happy with it so far.

To be honest, I was very satisfied with the customer service. Sure, watches in this price range should normally last for decades, not just a few years – but sometimes things just happen.

PS: After some research, I also found out what probably caused the issue with my 945: the buttons are not water-resistant if you press them underwater. Only from the 965 models onward are the buttons waterproof even when pressed. That’s a bit odd, since all Forerunner watches are advertised as water-resistant – and unfortunately, you hardly find this detail on any official site.

    Hope that helps!
