Running workout pace confusion

For a given workout "step", how can I see my lap pace? Step pace shows the average for the whole step, not each km... and lap pace doesn't reset as you start a new step and therefore averages your pace across multiple steps e.g. the warm up and the workout itself.

Context:

I use 2 data screens for my running workouts:

  1. Screen 1: Shows overall workout distance and lap pace (a "lap" is defined as 1km)
  2. Screen 2: Shows step distance and step pace

Let's say I do a basic workout: Step 1 = 20 min warm-up; Step 2 = 30 min @ half marathon pace; Step 3 = cool down

Issue summary:

  • The step pace only shows me the average pace for the entire 30 minute HMP "step" - I want to see my average pace for each km I run in that step.
  • Conversely, the lap pace shows my average km pace but does not account for when a new step starts e.g. I may do a 4.25km warm up, then start the next step, but the lap pace is averaging the 250m I did as part of Step 1 and the 750m I did in Step 2 - I want to see the lap pace reset as I enter a new step in the workout.
  • A couple notes to maybe help on this issue.  Personally I get the desire for a more granular/broken up (current lap) type pace for a long tempo interval.  I for one get around this by doing my longer intervals by repeats of the same length.  So if I have a 20min interval planned... i will do 4x5min or if I have a 5km tempo i set it up to be 5x1km intervals.

Your 2nd bullet...  I don't believe you have this correct, when your workout triggers to the next interval/step etc, this will also reset the autolap by starting a new lap.

So for one of my typical workouts, warmup until button press... then 6x .5mi Tempo (3mi total)... then cooldown.  My autolap is set to 1mile.

My laps on Garmin after the workout (and similarly displayed on watch) will be a mile or three warmup... then press lap button, stops the current lap (and warmup step , step pace is of entire warmup run) and it progresses to the repeated short intervals (step pace and lap pace are the same for this section).

    1mi (auto)

    1mi (auto)

    .32mi (workout step)

    .5mi tempo (workout step)

    .5mi tempo (workout step)

    .5mi tempo (workout step)

    .5mi tempo (workout step)

    .5mi tempo (workout step)

    .5mi tempo (workout step)

    1mi cooldown (workout step)

    .48mi cooldown (workout stopped)

This is also what I've seen on 955, although usually I don't have auto lap enabled during workouts. When I do have auto lap enabled, it's absolutely the case that the current lap is reset at the beginning of each step, judging by the distances at which the auto lap notifications appear. My auto lap distance is set to 1 km and I only ever get auto lap notifications for multiples of 1 km after the beginning of the current workout step. e.g. Say my first workout step is 0.75 km and my 2nd step is 2.5 km. I won't get auto lap notifications at 1/2/3 km into my run, I'll get notifications at 1.75 km and 2.75 km.

OP could try to verify this by also displaying lap time next to lap pace. If lap time resets to 0:00 at the beginning of each step (I think it should), then that confirms what you said.

You can also see this in the activity lap/interval list in Connect. Notice how intervals consist of 1 or more laps, not the other way around.

  • Very helpful, thanks for taking the time to respond. I completed a session yesterday testing your logic and you're right that the lap pace resets with each new workout step. I basically flicked between two data screens, one showing the step pace/ distance and countdown timer, and the other showing lap pace and the overall distance/timer for the run as a whole. The lap pace certainly gives me the information I need to hold steady KM splits in a longer tempo/ HMP interval.
