What's the purpose of the 7 different pre-installed maps?

On my Forerunner 945 LTE, the following 7 maps are installed, and the first 5 are activated by default:

  • [x] Worldwide DEM Basemap, NR
  • [x] TopoActive Europe 2020.20, North East
  • [x] TopoActive Europe 2020.20, South West
  • [x] Time Zone Map
  • [x] Garmin DEM Map EU 2020.10
  • [-] CourseView Medium SE Europe, Middle...
  • [-] CourseView Medium SE Pacific

Does anybody know (or can link to a documentation) what these maps are good for?

I'd like to know which I can deactivate (to improve reponsiveness of the very laggy and sometimes unresponsive map, that performs much much worse than shown in the many product reviews on youtube).

What I found out by now - just by trial:

  • Worldwide DEM Basemap, NR
    • Map of the whole planet earth incl. sea and land areas, country borders and only big roads and rivers without further details.
    • --> I assume: Not needed in normal use unless I want to scroll to another part of the world/other area and need some orientation where I am when zooming out.
  • TopoActive Europe 2020.20, North East
    • Detailed data incl. small streets and paths, for some part of Europe
  • TopoActive Europe 2020.20, South West
    • Detailed data incl. small streets and paths, for another part of Europe
  • Time Zone Map
    • Doesn't show ANYTHING. What is this good for? Why is it activated by default?
  • Garmin DEM Map EU 2020.10
    • Doesn't show ANYTHING. What is this good for? Why is it activated by default?
  • CourseView Medium SE Europe, Middle...
    • Doesn't show ANYTHING. What is this good for? When should I activate this?
  • CourseView Medium SE Pacific

  • Time Zone Map is good for knowing local time based on your location.

Garmin DEM Map, is good for knowing the elevation. DEM Means Digital Elevation Map (DEM).

    CourseView are Golf courses.

  • Oh I see - thanks. So the DEM map can be used for the Altimeter, if I understand correctly, and the Time Zone map for the time setting from GPS signal. Makes sense.

  • Yes, DEM can be used to calibrate it.

    Snippet from manual:
    "Calibrating the Barometric Altimeter

Your watch was already calibrated at the factory, and the watch uses automatic calibration at your GPS starting
point by default. You can manually calibrate the barometric altimeter if you know the correct elevation.

    1 Hold .
    2 Select Settings > Sensors & Accessories > Altimeter.
    3 Select an option:
    • To calibrate automatically from your GPS starting point, select Auto Cal., and select an option.
    • To enter the current elevation manually, select Calibrate > Enter Manually.
    • To enter the current elevation from the digital elevation model, select Calibrate > Use DEM.
    • To enter the current elevation from your GPS starting point, select Calibrate > Use GPS."

Yes, GPS is using it's own time and that needs to changed to local time where in my understanding the time zone map comes into play.
