Map Update Fails - Africa v2022.0

Hello.

I recently got a FR945. Initial updates were all good. Today I got a map update (TopoActive Africa version 2022.0) which failed ~halfway. Now I just get the error "There was an error installing the update". How do I fix this ?

  • Same with me. I have no points of interest or anything. Garmin needs to address this issue, it's poor service for a device that isn't cheap

  • Make sure you got enough free disk space on your computer for download+unpacking of files ?

  • New watch so has all its available space and I still have 500gigs on my computer free .. this is a Garmin issue I'm sure of it

  • Garmin got back to me and asked for log files, but still waiting for a fix. In the meantime I loaded some openstreet maps so have detail but no popularity information so creating routes doesn't use popular routes, so who knows where it will take you. Especially in SA!

I will let you know if I ever get feedback.

  • I was lucky.. my watch was a couple days old, I returned it, got a new one, tried the update and booom.. it worked.. turned out that it was a fault on the watch. So not every update is the network, express update, and all the other excuses given. It could just be a fault on the watch

  • Garmin got back to me. Fix was to change a code number in one of the files. Once edited and changed, I plugged in again and it updated.

  • So next one hitting this problem needs to ask Garmin what you did as you didn't feel like you should tell exactly what was the fix? I kind of understand if the code is somehow personal, but you don't even tell this and can one figure out the personal number somehow.

Would it be too bad to share the solution and help also others?

  • The reason why I didin't share is because if you use the wrong code it could have a catastrophic effect on your watch....

Garmin responded fairly quickly to me so I don't see why they wouldn't to everyone else.

Below are the steps given to me minus the codes.

    1. Connect your Forerunner 945 to your computer
    2. Quit Garmin Express
    3. Open system tray (bottom-right) and right click on the Express icon
    4. Select Quit and confirm
    5. Open your computer's file explorer
    6. Open the drive for your Forerunner 945 > Garmin
    7. Right Click on the file GarminDevice.xml
    8. Select Edit
    9. Press CTRL + F on your keyboard
    10. Search for xxxxxxxxx
    11. Replace it with xxxxxxxx
    12. Select File in the top-left > Save
    13. Open Express
    14. Attempt to update your map again
  • Finally got a resolution from Garmin International last week after providing log files etc. They recommended I take the device back and swap it out. Took it to Garmin South Africa and they confirmed a "faulty IWR" and they replaced the unit.

  • I had the same issues when updating the Europe Maps from my laptop, after several attempts on a different computer, I eventually got it working and the maps are now up to date. Can't really explain it but I've been able to fix it before contacting support.
