Feedback Thread - Forerunner 945 Beta software version 8.09

So I thought I'd start this thread with feedfback on the new beta just released... I just installed it myself so can't comment yet, but did write down the version changes for now:

Updated:

Software 8.02 -> 8.09
GPS 5.30 -> 5.40
CIQ 3.2.6 -> 3.2.8
BMX 4.0.3 -> 5.0.4
WHR 4.00.03 -> 5.00.04
HUB 9.01 -> 14.05

Unchanged:

WIFI 2.60
ANT 6.11

  • That may be a setting. Mine is set to light up with what I think of as look-at-watch motion, and otherwise stay off. Since fw 7.80 and maybe earlier, can't remember, the backlight comes on a LOT during pre-dawn runs. At least several times a minute. Probably not randomly but with much less / different motion.

  • Exactly. From my observations it seems that watch is too sensitive to arm movement. Earlier it worked as it should - only when I made explicit look-at-watch arm movement.

    What's interesting : My wife has got exactly the same Forerunner 945 with 7.80 firmware and backlight behaves as it should.

    I think that I am getting close to decision to make reset to factory defaults or downgrade to 7.80, but I am very reluctant to it since I will have to configure everything from scratch.

  • I’m on 7.80 - never updated to the last beta, nor this one yet - and that’s when the backlight issue began for me. Had to just turn it off since the light would basically say on during a run. So 7.80 may not be the solution.

  • Does the tennis profile give something extra metrics? If not, it's pointless, if it does, then not.

    But the need is people want to log those in right sports, but this could be solved by having the basic profiles to choose from and then as you now "clone" it doesn't work if you just rename it to be "Some niche sport", they are in GC as the original profile. This could be solved if Garmin would just have more extensive list of sports from there to categorize your sport profile to be and then that info would also transfer to GC and people would be happy.

    Like it's kind of annoying that I can't differentiate my Orienteering activities from Trail running as both are marked as Trail running as there isn't Orienteering to be chosen. It would not need any new sport profile to the watch, just me being able to say this clone of Trail running is Orienteering and show it at that in the GC.

  • I've been wondering about the same thing. Particularly since the Garmin Connect App offers a broader variety of sports than most watches. It would be great if you could set up the mapping yourself, e.g. this clone of backcountry skiing is Splitboarding etc.

    But I think the main reason, they don't do that is, that the sports activities on cheaper watches are even more limited and this way even the cheaper watches could sort of get all the sports.

  • Today my 945 on 8.09 crashed for the first time in 2 years of ownership while saving a run... Interestingly enough the run was not lost and got synced when my Phone was in range but on the 945 it's not shown in the last activity widget but it's in the History one. Load and VO2MAX were updated but not the recovery and the weekly mileage in the main clock face.

    :-(

  • Optical HR is very hit and miss since updating to 8.09. Before, the OHR would turn itself off quite frequently, and not register any HR during general day to day wearing.

    Since the update, the OHR lights are on constantly, and still not picking up a HR. I have to go into the Health Stats widget --> Heart Rate, and set it measuring before it picks it up again.

    Also, while on a run last night, while wearing a HRM Pro, the OHR monitor was still on, and not disabling itself due to their being an external HRM.

    Pulse Ox is off (I've never had it enabled in the 2 years I've owned the watch).

  • This last FW is a mess. OHR stays on sometimes when Watch is off wrist. Battery is horrible. For the first time ever my watch rebooted while saving a run.... No more betas for me! ;-)

  • This is the first time I've tried a beta firmware, as with it being an update to the 8.02 update, you'd think they would have a pretty decent version to put out......but doesn't seem that way.

  • Excelent update! Very smooth and fast! Good battery life.
