Will Trail VO2 max come to 945?

Rainmaker said so, but there is no sign of it, no new beta, nothing.

Since it's mostly an algorithm change  and it's out for the fenix 6 some weeks ago, I guess the 945 is slowly being abandoned.... Disappointed

  • Liar? I didn't even a little bit suggest that. It's just we don't know his source, we don't know what exactly has been said, how Ray did he interpret that. And maybe what has said to Ray has then changed internally and so on.

So the official Garmin sources has no conflict and there's nothing fishy.

  • He has been very specific about models that will receive the feature. It's not possible to advance such information without somebody being very detailed with him. So, although Garmin may have changed opinion after releasing the information to him, it's not very likely that will happen.

Not to say that Ray information contradicts what Garmin Brooks said " Nothing has been decided one way or the other". Of course everything is decided one way or the other. Or else nobody from Garmin would have said it to Ray.

So something is missing here.... and we have to wait to understand. I now believe what I first wrote today. Some 945 iteration is coming, dev team busy, extra features may come after or around that time only.

  • Very specific, and that was my point, we don't know what that has been. That can be like "we hope to add it to models XYZ", "we add it to models XYZ", "we are planning to add it to models XYZ", etc. There a lot of possibilities what has been said and how it's interpret and so on.

Well, something is missing, it's the something that they are going to release soon and that's the reason dev team is busy. I don't think that's there much proof to say that something is missing, all seems pretty logical. If there isn't new hardware release before summer, then something is missing, now this all seems pretty clear. Of course we can't know for sure, but all the things points to that and you also agree that there's something coming. So what's the problem here?

    – Climb Pro 2.0 Descents
    – Climb Pro 2.0 Alerts
    – Trail Run VO2Max
    – Ultra Run Rest Timer

And yes, the Fenix 6 & MARQ get those feature updates today in a firmware update (well, they were in public beta a few weeks ago too). Additionally, the Forerunner 945 & Forerunner 745 will also get all those updates. The Forerunner 245/245 Music will get the Trail Running VO2Max enhancements. The timing however on the Forerunner series is less clear, with Garmin saying likely more spring.

    And more recently:

Again, they were hesitant to give exact dates, but don’t expect it next week (for either), but you won’t be waiting till summer either (unless something goes horribly wrong).

    And more:

Garmin confirmed that again last night in e-mails, but won’t commit to an exact timeframe. It sounds like it’ll be as the weather gets beyond snow, but not yet swimsuit weather. At least here in the Netherlands.

Then again, the Dutch will undoubtedly be out in bikinis or less on Saturday when the temps spike at 17*C/63*F…despite ice still floating in the canals. Slight smile

So for me this means... guys... this is dependent on a new model coming out.... and I can say no more about it. At least this is how I interpret all this talk. Let's wait, hope not much more. People are already in bikinis in my country Slight smile

  • You also forget that the in-device sleep is in the queue before those ;)

I highly doubt that there's still ice in Netherlands as the ice is melting fast in Finland also and the temperature has been pretty similar.

  • yes, he also made several statemente regarding that feature. I did't mentioned it because it's not this post topic, and because Garmin Brooks already confirmed that one in another post. That confused me a bit, because he admited that one in sync with Ray, and this one is a bit on the fuzzy side...

But I think this line of thought is good. A new device on the way (I bet 955), dev team busy with last details, betas with promised features have to wait for a more suitable time, maybe will be used to test those features deployment on new model. So 945 approaching end line. No regrets. It has been a wonderful piece!

  • Yes, I tend to believe what Ray says as he's been in the industry for a very long time and he doesn't like to speculate. For pure speculation and rumour I can think of another quite popular blog to read

  • Geez... Guys, regardless of whoever got told what, be it a journalist, blogger, tech rep, etc. (even here in the forum):

    - plans may change

    - technical problems may arise

    - priorities may shift

Do I think DCRainmakers statement was right? Yes I do. Do I think the Garmin rep who told him, believed this was gonna happen? Most probably. But again, see above!

In the end, if we are honest, it comes down to this: we bought a watch with a certain set of features. Full stop (not talking about if those work as they should or not). Every other additional feature is not guaranteed and not part of the purchase. So, if we get new features (and we already did), it is like a "gift" (for lack of a better word), and not to be taken for granted.

Would I like Trail VO2max on the FR, or the advanced sleep metrics? Yes, I would. Would I be disappointed if I read that it will come, but it doesn't? Yes, I would (actualy am). But, can I expect it (or evend demand it) to receive it from Garmin? No I cannot. Because first, they didn't officialy announce anything and second, even if they did, they are not bound to do it, because we bought the watch without any promise for future features (of course, if they announce something officialy but don't follow through without a darn good explanation, their credibility will go down the sh.. toilett. But that is another issue entirely).

  • Well, I think people are just annoyed to wait for these and are getting pretty impatient. Fenix has them and that makes them feel like 2nd tier people with the highest Forerunner model.

I think that those are coming, but it just takes time. I think after those and without clear statement that "those won't be coming, sorry", they kind of are forced to implement those.

Would be interesting to know what are the team sizes doing Fenix and Forerunner as the Fenix team seems to have more resources, much higher release cycle and so on. It might also be that Garmin thinks Fenix is a lifestyle watch and bugs here and there aren't issue with quicker release cycle. And no, I'm not saying that 945 there hasn't been bugs. But it's more often that Fenix gets the new features first.

Also this Fenix first thing has got me to think, should the next Garmin watch be a lifestyle watch, which I kind of hate, but as the Fenix seems to have more love...

Yes, I too feel like that sometimes (well not anymore, I got a Fenix 6 pro now Sweat smileUpside down). But I must also admit to myself, that I got what I bought, not more, not less (yeah, I too always want more).

Only until the next Fenix is out... Then it will only be the new one who's getting more love Unamused  (ok, regarding this, I also gotta admit that this is just how thing are, not only with Garmin). Like a marriage, as soon as the kids are here, they get a lot more attention and love than the husband... But i digress Innocent
