ANT+ and Android

Don`t know if this is the right thread but I`m puzzled. Bought  S21 Ultra just to discover that phone which supposed to have ANT+ doesn`t have it working at the moment. I found out that it`s not the phone hardware but lack of ANT HAL Service in Android 11. Garmin I`ve always thought that ANT is your project. I would appreciate if anyone from Garmin could explain me what is happenning. I asked the same question to Samsung as of now they make false advertising.

My understanding is that older devices that had Ant+ working with Android 11 switch also stopped functioning. Anyone can share their experience ?

  • Do you think asking in a product specific forum (this one is only about the Forerunner 945) will help you when asking about a missing feature in a totally different product?

ANT is its own company but even they can’t force anybody to implement their protocols. The only one you can ask is Samsung.

  • Very constructive. You could save it to yourself. I`m asking also here as there is lots of sport peopole that might have similar general issue. ANT+ was also a standard pushed by Garmin.

  • As noted the problem is with your phone not a Garmin 945.

  • I know that previous Samsung galaxy phones had ANT+ implemented and this was certainly something I appreciated before Garmin watches featured Bluetooth or WiFi, but I have no idea about the S21.

  • Disclaimer: My phone runs an older Android version, so apology in advance if this is useless advice.

All Android phones and tablets I've had came with ANT+ hardware but without the ANT+ software support installed, so I installed that later myself. The "ANT+ Radio Service" and "ANT+ Plugins Service" apps do not support Android 11 yet, but may be worth a try. "ANT+ Plugin Sampler" is invaluable for basic troubleshooting of ANT+ sensors. If the ANT+ plugin service does not run on your phone, there's a paid app "ANT+ Enabler", with which I don't have experience.

If you're interested in ANT+ and want to learn more, there's loads to read on This is Ant website.

  • Not really the right forum but... I am using a Samsung S10 with Android 11 and ANT+ works fine. I use the phone and the ant+ connection to calibrate my bike trainer.

Worked fine also in Android 10.

No idea if the S21 is compatible with ant+.

  • Thank you for all the information. Samsung rep told me that current Android 11 build doesn`t have ANT Hal Service thus S21 is not supporting it at the moment. He was unable to say what will future bring in this regard and wether there will be an update to fix this.

Bearing above in mind I`m quite surprised with the information from KGB_NIST that S10 under Android 11 has a working ANT.

Anyway one more time thanks for information and sorry for bringing this here.

  • I'm actually struggling with the same issue on the S10 as you. The ANT+ service is not working proper for me under android 11, cant get my Garmin hart rate strap working since the update.

  • Strange. It is working for me. I have ANT firmware AUM1.05B00 and ANT HAL service 3.0.0 installed.

Have you checked with ANT Tester (an app)?

I can connect to both my Garmin HRM and my trainer (Elite Suito) using ant+.

  • With the ANT tester app it works but the app I use to track my cycling cant use ant+ since android 11.
As a crazy but fully functional solution I found this solution really well Broadcast HR from ANT+ HRM over Bluetooth
