TBT turn notification missing

Since my runs are getting longer, I've been using the maps/navigation on my Forerunner 945 a lot in the past couple of months. I've been plotting many different courses to make sure to get the proper distances. Also I'm experimenting with different routes (usualy trying to get the flattest route possible Sweat smile).

The thing is, when using a saved route, about 25% (might be more) of the time I just won't get a turn notification. When going to the map, It will show a turn much farther away (say, like in 800 meters), even though there are one or two other turns in between. I thought this might be a map problem so I downloaded another map of my region. No luck, still missing a lot of turn notifications. unfortunately this means that on many intersection I've to check the maps if I have to turn or not. This actualy defeats the whole purpose of TBT navigation.

I think it's always the same intersections that do not prompt a turn notification, but I'm not a 100% sure whether this is true or just a coincidence.

All my maps as well as the firmware are up to date. Anyone else experiencing the same problems?

  • Thats because the street is not making a turn, but a curve on the map. Do you get what I mean?

What other map did you download? Is it routable? Did you delete the Garmin one?

  • Actualy, they are definitely turns, and not curves. Like, choosing between going straight, 90° right or 90° left.

I downloaded "freizeitkarten" OSM map. They are routable (else I'd not have had any turn notifications). Never had a problem with those on other devices. BTW, I don't have the same problems on my Edge 830 with the same Garmin maps.

I did delete the Garmin maps once to make a fresh install, but not when loading the other OSM map. But I did disable the Garmin maps when running with the other map.

  • Here some pics to better visualize what I mean

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sorry guys, it's late, so I don't feel like translating everything. Basically I see no common denominator regarding roads that makes the error reproducible.

  • Btw, I forgot to mention that I tried creating the Routes with different sources. Garmin, Komoot, Plotaroute, ecc. Doesn’t make any difference. I wonder whether it’s my watch, the maps or Garmin’s way to calculate a route...

  • Garmin Connect seems to be generating TBT directions based on sharp changes in the course direction rather than actual trail turns. I've seen many cases when the watch missed  a turn direction for an actual a turn yet when I go on a trail with switchbacks I get turn notifications every 30-100 meters even though there are no actual turns (i. e. no side trails). Basically, on trails TBT directions are more annoying than helpful.

Just to be clear, these TBT directions are generated by Garmin Connect and don't depend on the actual map on the watch, whether it is routable, etc.

When a course is uploaded directly via USB, bypassing Garmin Connect, TBT directions aren't added.
