Fenix 6 Pro (47mm), no maps, wifi, music - vs - FR 945?

I'm a runner, marathons, moving up to ultras; I only run, nothing else. Roughly same price, Fenix 6 Pro (47mm), no maps, wifi, music, and FR 945. Which one should I get and why? The weight advantage of the FR 645, I've tried them both on and it's negligible, to my mind, not a deciding factor. TIA.

  • They are basically the same watch, they have the same hardware. So for pure function it does not really matter.

I guess the f6 then because it’s more metal than plastic. That said, the lighter weight and the simplicity of the look of the fr, the slightly smaller, thinner, shallower build, that does add something to the 645. It’s a personal thing. Thank you!

  • I chose 945 because of its weight. It's a watch you could wear 24/7.

  • Maps are really nice, not necessary but it's great to have them when you're in areas you're not as familiar with... I use them often enough to be a real benefit.

    Music, never used it.

Wifi, nice to have but not necessary... It IS faster and more convenient then bluetooth syncing though. (And now I just disable bluetooth most of the time, saves battery)

Weight and thickness, FR945... You get used to it the heavier watch, sure, but it moves around more and imo simply is a disadvantage, It being thicker also doesn't help with wearing it under long sleeves.

Looks, personal. I like the subtle look of the 945, but can imagine ppl prefer the more rugged look of the fenix.

    GPS, battery, etc seems similar...

Funcionality, I would go for the 945... It's the more practical watch. But if you really like the looks of the fenix6, well... hard to argue with that ;)

Thanks, flipstone!!! So maybe, if the power manager is coming to the 945, I'll go that route but if not, I'll go f6. Do you know if wifi, music and maps is one option, i.e. they all come as one option? As far as I know, if you want maps, you get music and wifi - yes?? And do you know if power manager is available on the 945? Is it available on the f6pro (the 47mm) model? Thanks, again!

  • It's largely personal preference. Basic features are the same.

The weight also isn't a real deal breaker. Fenix 6 might be a bit more ridged because to the steal casing. The 945 is also strong enough to survive an occasional blow.

Being an ultra-runner myself, I do advise you to get a watch with maps if you can. It really adds value when navigating (technical) courses easier. I believe the Fenix 6 in theory provides better battery life, if that's interesting. For both goes you can also charge them on the go if needed.

Personally, I like the looks of the Fenix more than the 945, but when my Fenix 3 broke down May last year, the 945 was available and the Fenix 6 wasn't yet. Hence, the choice for me was simple.

Thanks! Maybe, if the 945 has the power manager, I'll go that route but, if it doesn't, I'll go for the f6. The power manager is important to me, though 35hrs with gps is enough (just!) but, yes, charging on the go is an option (brings the 245 back into play!). I guess, if I don't get maps, I could regret it later on... Thanks, again!

  • Don't assume you'll actually get the 36 hrs of GPS... I think 24-25 is more realistic. Perhaps if you disable OHR, all backlighting, use GPS only, conditions are optimal, etc, you might get there... But in realistic/normal use, I don't tghink so.

  • There are CIQ options for maps (a friend of mine uses one on his 935 and it seems to work well) but I would not discount the use of maps as an option, especially if you're moving into ultra running.  I use the map feature on my 945 more than any of the other differentiators (music/garminpay).

I’m sold on maps now, thanks!
