Funny Story with FR945 after Blood donation

Hello,

today I wanted to smash my 10k record.

I trained well on trails but today on road 10k i wanted to earn reward for my hard intervalls in the woods.

Nothing fancy compared to you guys :-)

But this is how it went:

After couple minutes i felt heavy.

Then my watch told me my peformance level is -2..... strange i thought i should be better.

after 7k i started talking walk breaks and i look at aerobic training load and its 4.9.  I ran 15k 2 weeks ago and the load was not near that.

Something is wrong... then it dawned in me.... i went for a blood donation yesterday. :-)

I take this a pretty good function of the FR945.

  • Just wondering what was your average HR for this run compared to previous runs at similar pace? Slight smile

  • The pace and HR was comparable (average 160) at the beginning BUT I could not keep up the pace for 10 k. after 5k I had to decrease significantly after 7k i had to walk parts.

At the end the average was 152. with 6:46 min/km.

    Usually 10 k is 5:34 min/min @ 154. (Without feeling so dead as today)

  • I am surprised you could run a day after blood donation!

My own expirence is based on having something called genetic haemochromatosis, a genetic disorder where my body absorbs too much iron from my diet, storing iron in the body and organs, effectively poisoning them. The treatment; have a bag of blood taken whenever my iron levels go above the specified level (for me every 6 months, vegetarian diet you see. Was weekly to bring my levels down from the 400 times level) which causes the body to make new red blood cells from the stored iron. This is the most effective treatment, and is life long.

Anyway, my point is that I find myself wiped out for 48hours after treatment, which should be the same a standard blood donation.

  • Congratulations on even doing a race soon after giving blood. As a student I regularly donated a pint, I didn’t run and wasn’t as fit as I am now, then but even going up a flight of stairs I could feel my heart beat much faster.

Was there no way you could’ve donated after your race? It takes about  three months to make a pint/500ml of blood.

  • Ofcorse, I was just plain stupid:-)

  • That's one of the reasons I prefer donating platelets.  I keep the red blood cells, so there isn't much of an effect on my running.  (plus other reasons, such as I can donate more often, the platelets are put to different, needed use, etc.)  Still, thanks for being a blood donor!

  • I used to donate my plasma (AB+, so it's universal) but they stopped collecting just plasma, now they want all. I haven't donated after that :(
