HRM-Run (red) .. missing data

I've been using the 945 for about a year, and the external HRM since June last year, and all has been working fine. A few weeks ago I noticed that readings were becoming erratic, so I replaced the battery, and all seemed well for a bit, but now I'm getting this strange drop-out behavior.

I wet the sensors before I run always.

I'm puzzled that the HR resumes, but the others don't. Also, the run Cadence doesn't seem affected at all. Aren't all of these measured by the external HRM strap? And if so, why wouldn't all of the data be transmitted? Or stop. I.e., act the same.

Yesterday's 7 mile run looked similar to the 5 mile I show above

I guess I could try replacing the battery with another one, just to make sure the battery isn't the issue, but I'm still puzzled by some of the data resuming, others missing, and others stopping.

I saw some other posts, but didn't find anything conclusive.

  • I'm also experiencing the same issue with my HRM Tri and 945. The HR doesn't drop out because it continues recording on the strap even if the connection drops and cadence is recorded on the watch itself. The run dynamics data drop indicates that the ant connection is dropping. You aren't alone and I have escalated issue to Garmin support. See: forums.garmin.com/.../firm-4-40-no-more-garmin-hr-strap-and-hrm-strap-connection

  • I am having issues as well with my hrm run. At first i have a much higher heart rate. Si i changed the battery.  It didn’t help. Bu now the heartrate is about normal but i don’t have my breathing count it is 20 per minute flat out. Also cadence is “disturbed. I am on fw 4.41. All this happened since  fw4.41.

  • Two runs about same Intensity one on fw 4.40 and second on 4.41

  • Thank you for pointing me to that thread, and also reporting the problem to Garmin, hopefully the next firmware update will address this.

Aside, are you saying the strap itself can temporarily store the HR data which then gets transferred at the end when I'm at home, or did I misunderstand that part of the sentence "The HR doesn't drop out because it continues recording on the strap even if the connection drops "

  • there are 2 straps - the hrm tri with the blue cover, that caches data once the activity is started and the hrm run with the red cover - that does not store any data; the hrm tri is used mainly by triathletes / swimmers as ant signal doesn't pass through water - and at the end of the activity the hrm data is read and synced to the rest of the activity. that said, in your case - i would open a ticket with garmin support, see what they say -as the run looks a bit weird (after the dropout hr continued but not the other parameters)

  • ah, I didn't know that the HRM run doesn't cache HR data when ANT+ connection is lost. So , in my case, I have an HRM TRI (blue hr monitor), which will keep recording my HR even when my ANT+ connection to the watch is disrupted during a run (which is constantly as of latest firmware) and at the end of the run the watch will download the stored HR data

  • Thanks I will .. how do you open a ticket, is that something I do online, or do I ring them up? Luckily the strap should still be under warranty, I bought it last June.

  • Got it .. I didn't know that about either of the straps, but in my case it seems something else is amiss. I'll contact Garmin. Do you have a suggestion for the most effective way to go about this?

    Thanks.

  • i'd definitely go with written support - https://support.garmin.com/en-EN/?productID=530376&searchQuery=Dropouts&tab=topics - i replaced my native language with en-EN, that should work as well; also - hurry up as you're during the last month of warranty :D. what i'd also suggest is that when replacing the battery not to overtighten the screws as there might appear small cracks in the plastic through which water/moist will ingress:

this is the picture of 2 3-years old unsalvageable hrm's...:-), luckily the 3rd was fixed with a piece taken from one of these.

  • How did your's get like that? How often did you clean them? First thing I've done with my HRM straps is remove the screws and add a dab of silicone grease to stop them getting corroded. I also rinse my strap after every use and make sure the washable strap is washed every week at least. Can't machine wash the new one-piece ones but they can be rinsed and soaped by hand.
