Mapping heart rate zones from lactate measurement to Garmin device?

Hi everybody,

I use a Forerunner 945 for running and other sports. As you probably all know, Garmin has 5 heart rate zones defined in its devices or Garmin Connect.
The last days I conducted a performance test on a treadmill with the measurement of my lactate values. As a result I get 4 personal training zones which are

Regeneration / long endurance run
Basic endurance 1 / middle endurance run
Basic endurance 2 / fast run
Top/development / extensive run

I think those are the most common zones as an outcome of lactate measurement.
Now I’m trying to put these values into the Garmin Zones. I know you can define own zones even per sports.

But as you can see my measurement puts out 4 zones, while Garmin has 5 zones. Has anyone transferred his zones into the Garmin device? I’m not sure which zone is which. In the internet there are very rare information about this.
Unfortunately, there is no statement from Garmin. I think the 4 zones mentioned above are the most common ones.
(Btw. If a put my max. Heart rate into the Garmin app, the heart rate zones are not the same as they are in my test result).

So again in short: Do you know which Garmin zones are mapped with the zones from the test. I.e. Garmin zone 1 = Regeneration, Garmin Zone 2 = Basic endurance 1, …

Thank you in advance.

Greetings,

  • Can’t help you as I’ve never heard of these four zones as a ‘common outcome’ from Lactate testing. Always used 5 zones. You could map these four to the first four and leave a couple of beats below your LHT to the top for Zone 5. A beat or two different is neither hear nor there.

  • Thanks for your answer.

As I figured out, it may not be that easy. Indeed, I just thought I can make a performance test, use the outcome and put it to the Garmin watch. Maybe I was wrong with this assumption. But how do other athletes work with watch and performance tests?

As I did further research, and also provided by the Garmin Zones (and most other recommendations), the (Garmin) Zone 1 starts at approx. 50 % of the max heart rate. The first zone in my result starts at approx. 60 % of my max heart rate. Sure, 1 or 2 % may not be relevant. But I think 5 - 10 % difference are.

Zones and percentage doesn't fit with my results. Very confussing.

  • zone 1 in a 5 zone system is generally regarded as a "recovery zone". This would seem to be a bit below the "long endurance run"zone you mention above. Insert this zone 1, and hey presto you now have your 5 zones.

  • Thanks for your answer.

The confussing thing is, that the name of the first zone of "my 4 zone" system is also regenration zone.

    What I did so far:

The performance test also stated my indivduel anaerob treshold. If I use the zones in Garmin in percentage of the lactate treshold and put my treshold in the field in Garmin Connect, it uses this value for the beginning of zone 5. From there downwards, I come to the Garmin zone 2 with my first performance test zone.

Also confussing, my performance test zone 4 doesn't end at my max heart rate but 22 beats below it.

As I put it in now, my individual lactate treshold to my max heart rate is my zone 5 in Garmin (which is 27 beats)

  • Set it up like this. Below Z1 is recovery.

  • Hi,

thank you for the response. Why set it like this? Were is this coming from?

Unfortunately, I only know my AnT and not my AeT (or maybe it is the value where the lactate rise begins)?

    Thanks in advance.
