GPS v4.1

Has anyone else noticed a significant improvement in the apparent accuracy of GPS tracks since the firmware upgrade to 4.40 and the GPS firmware to 4.1? I may have had a couple of lucky runs, but tracks have been spot on with the new versions. I am running in fairly open countryside, but even so the tracks are noticeably better than previous ones recorded under similar circumstances. I am using the GPS-only setting (without Glonass or Galileo).

  • we own 2 945, upgraded to 4.40.
    within every run it changes how accurate it is.
    parts are super spot on, others are completely far away now.
    it's not consistent and not better than in previous versions for us.

  • I believe the gps have improved, but no real evidence. I use GPS + Galileo. Did some testing with the android app GPS Test, and were I live (Sweden) there are more galileo satellites over Glonass

    I was just posting about this in the F6 forum.  Take a look at the thread below.  More doesn't necessarily equal better.

    In the snapshot I've attached, I have 8 GPS, 9 Glonass and 8 Galileo satellites (I've eliminated Beidou, QZSS, etc.).  GPS Only gives me a fairly good signal with 3 green (strong) signals.  Adding Glonass gives me 3 more green satellites for a much better signal.  All 8 Galileo satellites are poor (red).  So, even if I were to eliminate 2 of the green Glonass satellites making it a total of 8 Galileo and 7 Glonass satellites, I'm still better off using Glonass due to the signal strength I'm receiving.  As someone mentioned in the F6 forum, it would be great if Garmin had some sort of auto function for GPS which used which ever combination gave the strongest signal.  In the meantime, I use the phone app to see what's best for the activity I'm about to do.

    There are more Glonass than Galileo satellites deployed. As they are all in low earth orbit (ie. not geostationary), you may sometimes see more Galileo satellites but they never stay for very long. You really are better off sticking to glonass for now, unless you know that you will get sufficient coverage for the whole duration of your activity.

  • Living i Norway here. The last few weeks the result with gps+galileo has been very good for me, spot on most of the activities. Before it was no good , i think either garmin has improved the galileo tracking or if something in the galileo system it self are improved.

    Before this i got the best tracking with GPS only.

  • What app are you using might come in handy :)

  • Search for GNSS View app. It will show you the number of available satellites by type.

    It's called GPS Test by Chartcross Limited for Android.  I don't know if it's available for iOS if you have an iPhone.

    i don't know how on earth was it even possible to shift itself that many times :-). gps + glonass, latest beta, 1 sec, etc.

    anyway - not losing hope, as the fenix crowd got (again!!!, ahead of the rest of the crowd) a gps fw update.  

  • It is just showing your mobile has weak RF capability, nothing more :)  Weaker C/No doesnt mean worse accuracy, the Glonass sats have much weaker accuracy (in-space and real) than Galileo, if You have a professional device, You can measure it easily (your mobile is not that one :)) . 

    Here is a quick report of raw accuracy of a 6mins measuring, i think clearly see which one is the better system and why :)
