Floor climbing Workout

Hi all

Towards doing a mainly floor climbing workout, what Activity profile will work the best?

I see a FLOOR CLIMB activity. However the reason I ask here, is whether TREADMILL RUN activity work as well?

I'm looking at Floors climbed or metres climbed, time, HR, distance (using accelerometer, not GPS).

Doi what do you guys recommend using - FLOOR CLIMB or TREADMILL activity profile?

Or any other option?

Cheers!

  • I can see both your activities now.

In first the elevation gain seen is 329 m, div by 3 is 110, reported as 108 floors.

In second, elevation gain is 271 m, div by 3 is 90, reported as 89 floors.

This is my floor climb workout. 240 m elevation gain, reported as 80 floors, exactly what I climbed in my case 10 floor x reps. So the floor climb actual reporting will depend on the floor height. Also doing it in a taller building should help. Doing 1up and 1 down will have more error I think.

  • I see. Thank you. But I climbed 130 the first day and 120 the second, that's for sure. I'm thinking now that may be some variation in atmospheric pressure during workout...  I don't think the floor height as the cause, because sometimes the watch differentiates good the floors up-down during some time (you can see the graphs of the activities)...

  • I dont know how the fr945 counts. I go up and down in multiple ways trying to undrstand and cant realize. Always or near always is counting at least one or two less floors in a 10 floor lap. Sometimes i did a 5 floor lap to check.. 4 floors.....sometimes 4 floor. Did a 15 floor lap... 13 counted. Did a 10 floor..pehaps 10 counted. Very random. It seems to be more acurate with the down floor... very accurate... perhaps its because i did them en near normal going down ladder speed.

  • A huge improvement in new 4.40 firmware. It stole only 7 floors in a 120 workout. A typical lap was 7 or 8 floor up and the watch read 7, 8 in most cases. Sometimes 6..sometimes 7. Before this firware update it always (90 95% times) read one floor lower.

  • I agree!  Look today workout climbing floors (up+down)*150 times with 4.40 firmware:

    https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/4760586349

Compare now with exactly same workout yesterday with old 4.20 firmware:

    https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/4756050224

And very good battery life, seems...   Good job, Garmin!    BUT the green graphic (climbing) let much to desire... don't relect the up-downs with precision.  In addition, the respiratory rate graph appears blank; It's not that I care much, but if it is, it should be fine. But despite this, I repeat: a great improvement

  • Is it possible to add the down floors In the final resume? It shows 0 now. While the workout, you can view the up AND down floors. Also the speed is not the same going up or down. Thank you

  • Yesterday's good result with firmware 4.40 must have been a coincidence ... Today new training going up and down floors and a very bad result. I have made 150 ups and downs of 1 floor and the 945 has registered only 82. This activity has been identical to that of yesterday and the day before yesterday and the results are not even similar ... The floor counter of this activity of climbing floors only hit by chance. Garmin, this needs a thorough overhaul ... Maybe the problem is that the altimeter is affected, during the activity, by climatic atmospheric pressure variations, but if so, the code should be modified so that they do not affect it.

  • Although there have been no recent comments in this regard, there are still problems with the "climbing floors" activity ... I have attached bottom three other recent examples, in addition to the ones I have posted a few days ago; In these last ones that I present now, I have really gone up 200 floors, while the FR945 registered a variable number each time, but always much lower than the real one:

    https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/4797946605

    https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/4793486678

    connect.garmin.com/.../4788763923

From what I have been seeing, up to approximately 50 floors, there is some agreement ... the FR945 can lose 2 or 3 ... but as we get closer to the 60-80 floor, the gap increases and usually reaches the floor 200 with 50 floors of difference or even more.

I clarify that my routine is to go up one floor and then go down, N times.

Is it possible to review this for a future update, Garmin, please? It would be very useful in the current quarantine situation for COVIR, since in Spain we have a ban on going out to do outdoor sports and for me - and I think that many more people - activities like this one of climbing floors or jumping rope are they have become, for a couple of months, almost the only thing we can afford to avoid losing fit.

  • I dont know how the 945 measures the altitude. I think its a digital baromter, but dont really know.

In my case i always do a 120-160 floor workout. Going up and down 10 floors.

With the new 4.40 it seems to be better. 40% is perfect (10 floors), 50% good (9 floors) 10% bad (8 floors).

I have a screen with UP floors, DOWN floors and ALTITUDE.

So, the altitude is the key to tigger the floor amount (up or down)

Sometimes its ok, and sometimes no.

For example at the top sometimes shows 35 meters, sometimes 31, sometimes 34.... as i said i dont know how the watch is measuring the altitude, but there is the answer to the up or down accuaracy. 3 meter is consider a floor, so with this " at the top" discrepancy its obvious the bad count on floors.

Also, sometimes in the exact moment i reached the 10th floor the accuracy is perfect and sometimes reads 9 and a couple of secornds later add the 10th floor. (while i recovering...perhaps 10-15 seconds later)

i did always this jog in a closed builing stairs. I ve tried getting satellites outside to get more accuracy for the altitude (only a tought), with no evidence in better pefromance.

  • Try to set, in setup / barometer = altimetre. In this way every variation of altitude, even of 1 meter, will always mesured.
