HRV Logging - When?

Under "Physiological metrics" I have "Log HRV" set to on.  However I have no idea when or on what schedule such logging occurs.  I don't see any data in Garmin Connect around HRV but my 3rd party software, to which I push all Garmin Connect data available shows a record of HRV from my 945.

the problem is, as shown below I can't figure out when it's doing this recording.  Sometimes it's at a specific time, but mostly it's just shown as a date recording.  Anyone know anything about this?

  • ;-) - in gcm you'll find it under performance stats -> hrv stress. basically it will give you a score from 1 to 100 - low to very stressed.

  • okay so we are getting to the bottom of this now...

Even though I did a "HRV stress" recording on the 945 that data did NOT get sent over to Sporttracks.  But I have done 3 workouts today and I do in fact see 3 logged entries at Sporttracks now and they also coincide with the END time of those workouts.  What was throwing me off previously is that apparently Sporttracks is time-shifted forward 5 hours for some reason (I'm on EST).

I wish the "HRV Stress" recording would get sent as that can be consistantly recorded every day at a certain time per protocol but I spoke with the Sporttracks team and they said the API only allows them to pull in what Garmin makes available.

I do appreciate the comments on this thread as I now have a much better understanding of what is going on with this metric now, so thank you all.

  • Yes, those are some health stats that doesn't have API to export, at least not in the same way.

I think you would do App like https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/0bdc0e75-9baa-417a-8c9f-e976662a5d2e

This does FIT, and they should then get transferred. But then it would need from 3rd party to support to read the CIQ data fields.

The data is likely there but Sporttracks might not be using it. Ask Sporttracks.

I did, as described in my post above, quoted below:

"...but I spoke with the Sporttracks team and they said the API only allows them to pull in what Garmin makes available."

  • probably that statement a bit stretched in this case :-). they should be getting also the data that the hrv stress app is recording. but right now they're (most probably) only seeing the data that's sent from your running / cycling / whatever activities...but not this particular hrv one. the hrv data sent from the running activity is perhaps not even that relevant, as you're in a continuous state of stress (but for that you have the performance condition - that's a mix between pace/ hr and hrv) - hence garmin uses the 'other' hrv app to record this data. as a protocol, i would do the measurement in the morning, a few minutes after waking up. i did that for a few weeks :-) - same as with the hydration tracking...:D

  • No, I think the problem is real and Garmin doesn't have API for those.

    https://developer.garmin.com

https://developer.garmin.com/health-api/overview/ these have the "Health Stats", and it's Stress, not the HRV Stress.
https://developer.garmin.com/training-api/overview/ these get you the activities.

None of these will get you HRV Stress.

EDIT: Or at least, without having the API documentation they don't advertise you could get that data.

    I hear ya.

What we need is a scale that we can stand on every morning that will record:

    weight

    fat %

    HRV

resting HR (thru some algorithm as we'll be standing)

and what the heck let's add hydration level too as that can be generally arrived at through algorithms

Then push all that data into Garmin Connect and available to all our other 3rd party trackers (TrainingPeaks, Sporttracks, Strava, etc).

most probably. they're getting only what garmin published - i was a bit ironic on the 'what Garmin makes available' statement :-)

  • Apologies, missed that bit.
