HRV Logging - When?

Under "Physiological metrics" I have "Log HRV" set to on.  However I have no idea when or on what schedule such logging occurs.  I don't see any data in Garmin Connect around HRV but my 3rd party software, to which I push all Garmin Connect data available shows a record of HRV from my 945.

the problem is, as shown below I can't figure out when it's doing this recording.  Sometimes it's at a specific time, but mostly it's just shown as a date recording.  Anyone know anything about this?

  • I think it's logged every second like the HR, but have not really watched the fit files how it's there.

I did use Firstbeat Athlete before it got unsupported and I think Garmin now has everything it had except the "Virtual Coach" which gave which kind of training you should do or have a rest day.

I think the problem is your 3rd party software not working logically :)  Have you done two training on that day when it gives two values and the time would be the start or end time?

    I did actually but not at the time intervals specified in those logs (i.e. 12/20 @ 426pm & 442pm or 1/3 @ 914 & 935pm).

I could see the times being off (if 3rd party is on Pacific time or something) but the relative intervals between workouts should match what's in Garmin Connect.

  • P.S.  Thanks for the insight.  I think I'm finally starting to figure this out, as it's simply recording HRV whenever there is a workout and only when there is a workout.  It *seems* like it only does it on Run workouts but I'm not so sure about that aspect.

What was throwing me off was the timing of the recordings, but it looks like the 3rd party software (i.e. Sporttracks mobile) is at fault there and recording them at some timeshift.

  • If it's end times, then the relative interval is depends on the length of the trainings and it's not same as in Garmin as it shows start times.

  • Yes, HRV is only logged to activities. I think it should not matter which activity, but at least it used to require proper HR strap capable to tell HRV.

But nowadays optical has some HRV support also, but I'm not sure, does it get logged.

I don't use optical when training, it's just for the 24/7.

  • It appears to me that the built-in onboard OHR is *not* used to record HRV.

The reason I say that is that I did a run early this morning with an external HRM (Scosche Rhythm24) that recorded an HRV entry, but then another workout at lunch where I just used the on board OHR (which was terrible btw) and I don't see another HRV entry recorded now.

  • It is already stated in the manuals that it only logs HRV if HRV is provided from an external HRM.

  • Thanks, I remember that from reading it previously but was confirming with jmto since he brought it up in the above post.

Back on topic, I'm not sure how useful HRV is if it's just recorded during an activity.  Seems like the literature generally says to record HRV at the same time of day and generally when at rest (like first thing in the morning).  Mine certainly is erratic based on what's getting recorded from me, I can't see any actionable result from reviewing it regularly.

  • https://www8.garmin.com/manuals/webhelp/forerunner945/EN-US/GUID-13AA1C94-7609-455C-BBBB-B11DA8BD9433.html - it's an garmin app for that, you can measure it several times a day and track it in garmin connect; the other app/df you could use is Monitor+HRV and adding the df into the activity screens will give you lots of extra hr-related data

  • That's excellent, thanks for sharing.  I just did the Garmin App and got a value.  Any idea where this data is stored in Garmin Connect?  I don't see anything under "reports" or "heart rate."
