Lactate threshold test not working - always "workout ended, threshold not found"

Just wondering what I'm doing wrong - I have had 4 attempts to get a successful lactate threshold test, and each one gives me "workout ended, threshold not found"

Am doing them on grass athletics track

I am pretty much staying within each interval's HR range

It doesn't consistently guide me through the same intervals though -

HR max set at 170 - 2x 4min, 2x 3min - "threshold not found"

HR max set at default (165) - 3x 4min, 2x 3min - "threshold not found"

HR max lowered to 160 - 2x 4min, 1x 3min - "threshold not found"

  • Come on Garmin!  Please!  We pay good money for your sports watches.   Why make this so difficult.   Fix the criteria a d give us good documentation on parameters needed to perform the tests.

    I've done the lactate threshold test and both times the test ended with no threshold detected.  This is incredibly frustrating.

  • Before I got my chest band, I used my maximum HR when I ran a 5K to set my max HR.  It was substantially higher than the 220-age calculation.  (This assumes you actually pushed on the 5K.  I know I did, because I had to sit to avoid a white out afterward.)

    Now that I've got a chest band, occasionally after I run it will update the measurement.  It's not one that I'm focused on.

  • i dont know there is such a way to do the lactate threshold test, my lthr just come up immediately after i finish my first run with the hr belt. it shows my lthr is 182 and mhr is 200.

  • How old are you and what is your MHR?

    I am 42 and based on my past running stats, my MHR is ~200.

  • It is documented what they are looking for.  IIRC They want to see HR steady or even slightly dropping late in the test (usually pace also) and Heart rate variability going up.  I'm also assuming they want to see your HR up high the expected range.

     They are not going to take your run activity data that doesn't point to a Lactate threshold result...  and give you a Lactate threshold pace/HR.  Why would they do that?  


  • I had mine about a year ago after that no succesfull tests on my FR 945. I had the same on my old forerunner 630. Mostly tests failed. I had set the max hr after a lab test where the max hr was determined. So i have no clue why and now i don’t care about anymore. I now run with a Stryd with power.

    How does these relevate to each other? I can't understand how some imaginary power number is related to lactate threshold and how can that imaginary power number replace it?

  •  @jmto i found out that running power via Stryd is very accurate. With heart rate there are some troubles , it is influenced by drinking coffee or temperature. There is  always a lag with heartrate. If i do track intervals my heartrate is still at e.g. 120 untill 200-250 meters and my power number is accurate from the start of an interval. Also when running hills you’ll see your powernumber is already up to your cp (critical  power) and your heartrate is still in zone 1 or 2. You could overshoot yourself already. Heartrate is input, power is output.  When i tested it in the beginning on a flat course is could reproduce thesame pace at a given powernumber. The Stryd website van calculate a cp a s you have done some different kind of runs, but you can also do a cp test or go out and run a all out 5-10 k.  Also running with heartrate has in a long run a cardiac drift given a even pace. Power doesn’t fluctuate that much. For more info take a look at www.stryd.com. Or the video’s from stryd you tube to learn more. Ik highly recommend running with power. Also inthe book running with power there is stated there is a correlation  between cp and vo2max. The book is from Hans vanDijk en Ron van Megen. It is also in English. Furthermore you can take a look at the Steven Palladino powerproject for more insights

    Can you tell me more about your stryd? is it working well?
    Do you use it more for running in flat routs or also in the mountains uphill?
