Indoor swim app advice

I would like to start tracking my indoor swimming with my 945. I have set the correct pool length. How does it work in the pool? Do I push a lap button every time I swim a pool length? Honestly for now I only care about distance.

  • You don´t have to do anything special. Just swim. The watch detects laps, strokes, distance,.... Lap button just for rest periods.

It will detect a lap even if I don't do a proper turn? Let me be clear - for now I swim a length, stop for a few seconds, swim another lap, stop for a few moments, etc.. Slight smile

  • If you swim different sets (e.g., with different styles), push the lap button at the end of each set and when you start the next one. This way, you'll measure the rest period as well as see each set individually, which is helpful if you do some sets in one style only, and others using mixed styles. Note that the FR has issues measuring the distance correctly if you abruptly stop in the middle of the pool.

Additionally, there's the "Drill" function (typically the data screen at the bottom). Use this, if you don't swim a style but, e.g., only with legs or using a pull boy, since Garmin can't measure the distance for those types of training. You can start a drill by pushing the lap button while being on the Drill screen, and end it when you are done, once again using the lap button. The watch will then ask you how far you swam.

By using laps and drills, you'll be sure to log the whole distance of your swim.

  • I don't think resting should be a problem. This will only cause issues if you rest in the middle of the pool.

  • That will be fine. Just start the swim activity and off you go. Ensure you have a strong push off from the wall before starting your swim stroke. Ensure you don't stop mid length or change stroke type and tap the wall at the end before starting your next length. It doesn't matter how long you wait before starting your next length. If you require a break press the lap button which starts the rest timer. After the rest press lap button again to start the activity timer.

Hi Jonas, how to get to drill screen ? I’m quite new to Garmin Fenix 6 pro and have a challenge to detect correct amount of laps and distance. I’m not only swimming but doing tech training - so, mammy styles (like legs only, etc).

  • Hi Arthur. For me, it was the lowest data screen before activating wrist HR, and now it is the second-lowest data screen. Just note that the drill logging feature is only avaliable for pool swimming and not for open-water swimming. See here for the Fenix 6 Pro guide on drill logging. It is invaluable for tech training. :)
