Two Sapphire Fenix 6 Pro’s, backlight / contrast issues

I bought two fenix 6’s today, both are the Carbon grey DLC coated with sapphire glass.

Have a look at these photos, my wife's is on the left hand side and mine the right. Her looks very yellow compared to mine which looks far crisper and sharper. Both have backlight set to 50%.

Any thoughts on if there’s a setting other than backlight that could cause this before I go back to the shop where I bought them?

Are there still issues when buying a Fenix 6 and contrast/backlight issues or has it been solved? Also would the new Pro Solar have fixed this issue? Thanks

Which Fenix solar did you get? pro? x?

  • Hmm, interesting.  To throw my watches into the statistical pool, my 6x Sapphire (63408xxxx) also has excellent contrast right up to 100% with very little backlight coloration.  My 6 Pro has quite a lot of backlight bleed even at 20%, making it look quite washed out.  The 5x Plus Sapphire I had before that also looked washed out.

  • Well obviously therea are as you can see from the newest posts. Bought myself a Fenix 6 Pro last week. Without the backlight the screen looks jet black. With the backlight at 10-20%, the screen looks bright black with a slight but distinct bluish hue. If I take a photo of the screen with the backlight on, it has a bluish/purple tint althought it looks a lot shaper and better than my Vivoactive 3.

I do think that there should not be so much variation between units. However, I also think that a lot of people are having issues with how the screen looks in a photo and not how it looks in real life (which are two very different things). So while mine does have that slight blue/purple tint in photos, when I look at my watch in a dark bedroom, the screen does not look blue or purple to me, but not-of-the-highest-quality bright black. That's enough for me and I'm keeping the watch. The viewing angles are decent too. Put it this way, my F6 Pro has a lot better-looking screen than my Vivoactive 3 and the only thing that bothered me with the VA3 (having used it for both sports and business) is that I could've used a bit more pixels (which F6 Pro offers).

Cheers for the detailed reply man! I feel like the new Solar options might have some differences tho in terms of hardware. If you look at the button on the top right of the new 6 solars, it looks more pronounced compared to their other versions. It looks more sturdier. If this is the case, they might have changed other parts of the hardware as well, maybe the backlight problem, seeing as it was so talked about! Just a thought though.

I think what you say is quite accurate, however there is a but there. The viewing angle is often very bad at the units that has blue tint. There is units where you can see everything on the watch in all angles, all the way till you can't see the class anymore. This is the upgrade you should look for.

  • There are reports of the blue screen issue with Solars as well so bare that in mind. I would've gotten the Solar version but, living in a country where winters are long and dark, I'm certainly not going to pay a few hundred bucks more for a feature that's does not do much. Yes, they did make a few visual tweaks to the case but otherwise it should be the same as the base Pro version aside from Solar. Those with Sapphire versions seem to have better luck although there are those reports of people buying half a dozen Sapphires with all of them having the blue screen issue. I passed on the Sapphire anyway as I much rather pay less and have the better readibility of the Gorilla Glass (plus I'd end up using a screen protector on a Sapphire anyway and that would defeat the purpose). If you have the money, you probably should buy the most expensive version but for my budget, even the base F6 Pro was pushing it.

Good point about the screen protector. That might change my mind on the sapphire version.
