If you have multiple devices with Training Status, why aren't they all the same?

Just upgraded to a 945 and haven't gotten rid of my 935 yet.

When I look in Garmin Connect the Training Status for each watch is different, even though when I set up my 945 I said to bring over all of my training history (& FirstBeat stats) so that the 945 would already know my VO2 max etc.

Do different devices use different algorithms for calculating performance metrics (Training Status, FTP, VO2 max, etc...)?

  • I have a 945 and an Edge 830... all of my runs and swims happen on the 945 and all of my bikes happen on the Edge. I also have two different statuses even with the true-up turned on. I've seen the status on my watch using the fitness level from a bike, so I know it is using the data... I'm still not clear on why they would be different

  • I just posted a similar question in the Garmin Connect Android forum.  I actually removed my previous watch from Garmin Connect but it still shows the Training Effect from "Unknown" as well as my current watch.  Seems very odd that the only data that is dependent on hardware is Training Effect but all others like HR, steps, stairs, etc is independent.  Definitely a bug.

  • This may not directly answer your question, but I believe the 945, 245 and after use a different/tweaked algorithm to compute VO2 Max (and also your race predictions). VO2 Max takes temperature into account now, and the race predictor uses your actual running history, and the new VO2 Max numbers, for its predictions resulting in less delusionally optimistic race predictions.

So the 945 would compute VO2 Max differently than the 935. (I believe I heard the above from DC Rainmaker .. but I'm not 100% sure of the source, I read a lot about the watch when it came out)

  • Interesting idea...however I am seeing the same issue after upgrading from the 945 to the Fenix 6 pro.  I thought that these two watches are essentially the same?

  • Same for Fenix 5x and move to 945. Disjointed data. Disappointing.

  • Yes, the watches using the new FirstBeat Algorithms compute VO2MAx different than older ones. For race predictions, it doesn't just look the times up in a table anymore, but also considers your recent activities.

Also Edge and Forerunner don't TrueUp some of these values Garmin stated somewhere here in these Forums.

  • As I also posted here: cross-post :

It seems that is is fixed now, at least partly...

Today I did an indoor cycling activity using my fenix 6 pro. After that, in GCM, the training status between the fenix and my edge 830 was different. After syncing the edge 830 however, the training status was the same.

Also the load focus and 7-day load is exactly the same. (in the load menu in training status). In the same menu there is also exercise load, which differs between the two devices. Not sure if this makes sense.

So it seems that after syncing both devices, training status is now the same. Which is good.

  • Because it's all is bullshit?:) HR, GPS, MAPS - this is measurable value. The rest is useless gadget.
