High heart rate during strength training on Forerunner 945

Hi all,

I have migrated from a Fenix 5 to a Forerunner 945, and am struggling with extremely high recorded heart rate during strength training. With a HRM-Run, it records as expected 120-130 BPM during work and a quick decline during rest-periods. Without a heart-rate strap, the watch records 150 BPM+ throughout the entire session with limited difference between rest and work periods. I wear the watch exactly as I did the Fenix (which was very accurate).

The resting heart rate and cardio/running is more in the range I would expect - albeit running is sometimes a bit too high as well. This is less of a problem though, since I would use the HR-strap anyway. Having to use it during strength training is more of an annoyance, so I would like to avoid it if possible.

Any ideas if there are any steps I can take myself to troubleshoot, or is this just a matter of crossing my fingers for a future software update which magically fixes the problem?

  • Which firmware are you running, i read some problems with high HR for the current beta. For example 

  • I'm not lifting, but see very high heart rate when running. With strap, last run 130 average. Same run and pace with ohrm 150!

    I believe you answered your own question when you said your HR is "as expected" with a chest strap.  A future FW update may or may not help you as oHRM's perform differently per individual, so no one here can honestly answer your question.  Your Fenix 5 had a different generation HR sensor.  It may have worked better for you as opposed to the newer sensor on the 945.  You may have to pick the lesser of the two evils.  Bad data with the oHRM, or better data with the annoyance you have wearing a strap.

    Any activity involving grip strength is going to result in inaccurate wrist optical HR readings. You need a chest strap for weightlifting, rowing and so forth. It was the same on older models - this isn't limited to the 945.
