Quickfit/Quick release - what do people use?

Hi all,

I just received my 945 tri bundle.  I'm intending to use it for "every day" wear to get all day HR/sleep tracking etc.  Also I of course wanted to use it for tris and training.

I noticed that the quick release kit is incredibly bulky though.  Like I don't think I would ever wear this thing all day long in that sled.

From searching a bit I've found that the Fenix quick release 22's seem to be compatible with the 945, which seems more plausible for every day use.

I was thinking of:

  • Purchasing a quick fit band
  • Using quick fit band for "every day" use
  • Keeping it in quickfit band for pool swim and training open water swim use
  • Popping off the quick fit band and dropping it into the quick release bike sled for bike rides
  • Using the bulky quick release arm sled for races w/ open water swim
    • My thought here was to have it more secure if I got kicked in open water

So I was wondering - what's everyone else doing with these?  That seem like a reasonable plan?

  • I went with the same theory when I originally bought my 935 and got two sets of Quickfit 22 bands (black and yellow) so I could change things up for casual and formal. I used the quick release kit on the first tri I raced with it and decided I hated that and have never used the quick release kit again in that way.

In races, I keep the 945 (which I upgraded to a couple months ago) on my wrist and I have my Edge 520 Plus on the bike. After the race is over, I just discard the activity on the 520 Plus and effectively use it as a bigger display. As a side note, I once used the actual remote display feature on the 520 Plus but decided I preferred to have the additional fields.

I now only use the quick release kit if I want to mount my 945 on my bike as the computer and never ever use the wrist mount.

  • Pretty much use the QR kit in the same way. I'll only use the watch head in the cradle for a triathlon when I move from the swim to the bike and to the run. Otherwise a standard QR band during the day. In the water I've never been overly worried about security either with the QR or the standard band. YMMV but I've been kicked around a little in the swim and all's been good.

  • Yep, I never use the Quick Fit cradle that goes on your wrist.  I bought the kit just for the bike mount piece.  Then a Quick Fit band.  I haven't used it like this for a triathlon, but it is so quick and easy to pop the straps on and off with the Quick Fit band, that even in a race I probably wouldn't use the wrist cradle.  Too bad they don't sell that combination as the wrist cradle is just so cumbersome.  Really nice though, that they kept the compatibility between the 935 and 945 with the bike mount cradle.

  • I got the QR mount with the 935 and never used it. Had a 520+ for the bike. But after battling with Physio-trueup/ no connection to phone and other buggy issues I sold the 935 and 520+ and got a 945. Now the QR mount is on the bike.
I generally just use a Quickfit band day-to-day but then use the QR mount/band on commute days etc..

I've actually started looking at the 130 as a remote display option for TRI's but I just can't bring myself to spend so much for just a display.

Awesome, thanks guys for your feedback!  I'll purchase a quick fit band and carry on with that.

  • Just a pointer on those bands... the garmin ones are hideously expensive. I have 3 or 4 that I bought from amazon for far less, and they are perfect - never had a problem.

  • Does the bike mount quick release plate just use a standard garmin mount. I'm wondering if it'll fit an out front mount.

  • Yes, the bike mount "cradle" just attaches to a standard quarter turn Garmin bike mount.

Hi, so the 935/945 cradle is a must use and it is not the 'bulky' item you refer to rather it is the strap itself? The Quick fit band is as the name implies, is just a band, one still needs to use the 935/945 cradle? Thanks

  • Yes, the cradle (The piece that attaches to the quarter turn bike mount) is still needed to mount on the bike.  Think of it as the "Quick Fit Band" attaches it to your wrist while the cradle attaches it to the bike.
