How can I avoid double counting of the same activity on Forerunner AND Edge 1030 when cycling?

I have used the Edge 1030 for road and MTB cycling, and now bought a Forerunner 945. When I record a bike ride with both devices, Garmin connect does not notice that both devices are in fact recording the same activity. So afterwards, I have two rides with almost (but not entirely) the same data. Funnily, the estimated recovery time and training effect is much higher on the Forerunner than on the Edge.

Do the units not synch or communicate with one another? They are linked to the same Garmin connect account.

  • Physio TrueUp will likely complicate things if you record the same activity on two devices and sync both.  The "Physio TrueUp" data from B will wind up on A and v/v if you have Physio TrueUp enabled on both.

The basic "TrueUp" for 24/7 data gets sorted out based on which is your primary tracker

  • On the other note of double activities, it would be nice if Garmin would also have some kind of "Exclude from stats" setting for activities. It could be used for double activities or some other reasons you wouldn't want it to count.

I have my Edge set the same way to prevent doubled up activities on Connect.

How do you manage software updates to the Edge as they require it to be connected to Express? I have been avoiding updates as I definitely do not want to manually delete all the doubled up activities again, including on Strava :( Note to self, don't recharge the Edge using the computer.

  • Just do not record on both devices, it does not make sense. You also do not use two speedos or trip recorder in your car and wonder why your car has such a high mileage, or? If you want to use both devices use extended display as mentioned or just wear the watch  without recording to count steps or something like that.

  • Here's one reason why I need two recordings: garmin device calculates my vo2 max on the device itself. If I upload exercise to Garmin connect from another source (like zwift) Garmin connect doesn't show my vo2 max and doesn't show my  exercise load correctly. So it is essential to record the exercise on two devices. In my case those devices aren't both Garmin though.

  • In your case, its totally correct to record on two devices.
If you use 2 VO2max capable Garmin devices wich also support Physio TrueUp, its not necessary because VO2 gets synched.
Even if it is an Edge and a Forerunner, the Edge shows you the Running VO2Max when its higher than his Cycling one (I don't have power meters so it can't calculate for cycling).

  • Agreed. This is what I do too. Record both. Garmin Connect gets the indoor ride exercise from the Forerunner and Strava gets the Zwift workout. I then delete the zwift workout (if it syncs to Connect)

  • i had the same issue - recorded both with the 945 and zwift and wanted to keep both data, as zwift delivered km and speed and garmin recovery and training metrics; the solution was to buy fitfilerepairtool and merging the two activities together; here's what to expect: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/4345154585 ; it's a bit on the expensive side, but as i do train a lot, it's a good investment :-)

le: obviously once merged, i delete both source files from gc

  • Why would you take off your watch when you go on a bike ride just so you don't record on both?

    For a second reason,

I can't get activity minutes by using my Edge and I can't see my watch well enough, or the tail light warnings well enough while riding my bike and having my eyes on the road.  There are also some things the Edge does that my watch does not.

It shouldn't be rocket science for Garmin not to duplicate an activity when you use two Garmin devices.  One would think that they would want to encourage you to spend your money that way.

  • It's not rocket science. Wear your watch while cycling. That's all you have to do for intensity minutes. You don't need to record anything on the watch at all.

Everything else can be recorded on the Edge and it will automatically be transferred over onto your watch if you have Physio True Up activated.

I do this, and it just works.
