How can I avoid double counting of the same activity on Forerunner AND Edge 1030 when cycling?

I have used the Edge 1030 for road and MTB cycling, and now bought a Forerunner 945. When I record a bike ride with both devices, Garmin connect does not notice that both devices are in fact recording the same activity. So afterwards, I have two rides with almost (but not entirely) the same data. Funnily, the estimated recovery time and training effect is much higher on the Forerunner than on the Edge.

Do the units not synch or communicate with one another? They are linked to the same Garmin connect account.

I turn off automatic uploading on my Edge to prevent these double activities. It will still keep the file locally in case you ever needed it as a backup but it won't auto upload to connect. Just be careful if you ever plug it into Express on a computer as it will then upload all those activities. I've spent hours having to comb through and delete months worth of duplicates after forgetting that.

Thanks. I delete them on Connect. Still a bit cumbersome, Garmin should really figure this out, can’t be rocket science.

Turning off auto uploads will keep you from needing to delete them on Connect.

  • Why not just use one device?

  • You start an activity on 2 devices. This leads to 2 uploaded activities in GC. This is expected system behaviour.

  • The easiest thing is when you're done, stop the recording (pause), and discard one and save the other.

  • In theory you should record only on one device (for biking this would be the edge) and physio True Up would take care of updating the metrics on the other devices. I know that this doesn't currently work for the new metrics the 945 supports so I am also discarding my activities on the edge.

  • Why would you record on both???

  • Telling him not to record on both isn't really very helpful.  I'm sure he has his reasons.

As for the two activities in GC, that's just how it works.  You record an activity, it uploads it.  But I believe when it figures out your stats for the day, it will be smart enough to only include the data from one device.  Not sure what happens if only one or the other has HR data.   I'd claim you really wouldn't want GC deciding which activity to keep as you might have reasons to keep one vs the other (HR, accidentally forgetting to resume after the lunch break, etc)

And no, the two units don't synchronize with each other in this sense.  They both communicate with Garmin Connect, and Garmin Connect does any synchronization needed.  Like if you had two watches, it keeps the steps in sync between the two so you don't get double steps counted.

Strava, for example, behaves differently, where it won't let you upload a 2nd activity similar to one already uploaded.
