First thoughts...

Got my device yesterday, impressed so far.

Need to keep an eye on the battery life, seemed to drop about 5% overnight, it gets hammered using gps, music and bluetooth as does syncing Spotify over WiFi.

Feels noticeably snappier than the 935, maps look really good and am looking forward to using them hiking around some Yorkshire hills. Seemingly some extra animations switching between screens which feels nice.

I synced up some music over Spotify, that really killed the battery, doing a refresh of all the playlists. It's not a bad interface but

I quickly paired my headphones and went for a 60min run last night, with zero dropouts. I was also trying to keep my HR in a specific zone, and got regular HR readings through the headphones which was very good.

The screen seems easier to read compared to the 935 with my eyes that usually need glasses for reading.

A few bugs noted so far, sight and go is missing from the menus, as is the option to only have gesture activated back light after sunset, suspect this could be quickly fixed.

Cheers,

Greg
  • What are people's thoughts on the buttons compared to the 935 or the Fenix 5 or 5+ 'clickiness'?
What is the vibration motor like?

    Thanks
  • ~ 6 hour bike ride took from 64 to 38 % battery = 26 %

    Tracking was absolutely perfect :-)

    I love it :-)

Very impressive fitness!! I looked at a couple of your rides including a 20 min section at 300w. If you don't mind, what does your F945 say your VO2 max cycling is now and what is your "near best" 4 minute cycling power? I'm working on a review of Firstbeat VO2 estimation for my blog and could really use some elite athlete data. Thanks.
  • Thanks - yeah things are going really good this year. 945 have me circling around 69-71 in vo2max. On the edge I have reached 72 quite a few times :)

My best 4 min this year is close to 420W with 73 kg. I do expect this to increase on the next month or so. A few weeks ago I also took a famous Strava KOM on a great hill in my area. I did this with 486W for 2:31 ;)

You are pretty amazing, that is superb. I plugged you into the Storer equation (probably one of the best for a cyclist with power data) and if you are about 30 yo, the VO2 max is about 70. The question is (and something that is difficult to decide) is whether the Firstbeat algorithm is as sensitive to change in weekly fitness as simply doing a 3-4 min max interval for MAP (maximal aerobic power). For me it is not - I can vary 5% on the MAP but my Fenix 5 display rarely changes. However, for folks that don't do max efforts, the Firstbeat process is an excellent estimation.

    Thank you again!
  • I'm age 43

I do see my vo2max change a bit according to Garmin - that is circling around 68-72. Though I doubt that is the true case, that it varies so much. I have a thinking that vo2max is rather constant.

For the last month or so I have been riding on this level. I will do another 6 week session to lift my fitness another level before La Marmotte in July.

And yes - I know it's quite incredible my (old) body still wants develop ;) But it's also awesome fun too
  • What about the new OHR, is it better than the previous one? In particular how does it work in a running race? If simeone could test it during a competition and give a feedback I will appreciate it. I have a 645, in long and/or slow training it works well, during interval training I wear a HR belt, but during my races the pulsations remains often flat giving wrong values of vo2max, training load and training status.
  • Can someone report on running battery life? My 935 (2YO) loose 4-5% per hour in running mode, that is around 20 hours of battery life, if the 945 is really lasting more than 30 hours, it should loose no more than 3% per hour. This is a very important for people running ultras. Thanks.
  • I think battery runs down a bit fast. Average on non-activity for me (as of right now) 36h turned on - no activities - 0.643% per hour. Most settings default.

Apart from that i tried running with a Bluetooth headset - and lap alerts sounds like Microphone Feedback (like when you place a microphone and speaker to close) and is very annoying.

Don't know if it happens with other headsets / Fenix 5 as I have not used the Music in my F5x+ before. (Headset Trekz Air) - i like the pace spoken pace feedback - but the Alert Tone is annoying and very loud at least on my headset.

No other issues with the headset - apart from it is an overpriced low spec Bluetooth headset with old fashioned "multi point connect" - using Trekz Air is like stepping back in time 4-5 years? They are ok for podcasts - but bone conduction is not great for music.
  • Mine just arrived this morning. I will have about 10 hours of outdoor running and cycling this week to test out the new GPS chipset and then my first OWS at the local reservoir on Sunday. My Fenix 5+ OWS tracking was horrendous, so I'm hoping the 945 is much better. I also have some 935 tracks in the same reservoir to compare it against so I'm pretty excited to see what it looks like. I also have a Marathon in two weeks and a running relay through the back country forests of Oregon in about a month, so the GPS chip will be getting a pretty thorough workout over the next couple weeks.
