Personal preference. The auto lap feature already logs my lap intervals and when I am in an activity, such as trail running, and want to see other data on the fly, it's too easy to inadvertently hit the…
Why do you want to disable it?
I guess the part I don’t understand is why is getting an extra lap every now and then a big deal? Accidentally pressing lap with auto lap turned on just splits one auto lap into two parts. Just add the the two parts together. I have an Edge 1030, Edge 530, Felix 5S+, and FR945 and you can’t disable the lap button on any or them. I am skeptical that Garmin will ever change it.
The feature of being able to disable the lap button exists in Fenix 5 series and then added to FR935 with a firmware update. So it is reasonable to expect it to remain in the next version of the model which is FR945

Actually, no it doesn't, it ends the current lap and starts a new full auto lap. Say you're running a half marathon (21.1 km) and you want 1 km auto-laps to coincide with the race's km markers. Now say you accidentally press Lap at 5.4 km. If you don't press Lap again, your laps will look like this:
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 5.4, 6.4, 7.4, 8.4, ....
In this case, if you want to "fix" your laps, you'll have to press Lap again at 6 km, which is annoying.
If pressing Lap really split one auto lap into two parts, then in this example, the next auto lap would've occurred at 6 km without any further intervention.

To be fair, it really shouldn't be a big deal, but to people like some of us who use Garmins in the first place to look at nerdy data while we run, it's kinda annoying. It sure bugs me, even though I know in the grand scheme of things, all of that data is pretty useless.
Then again, getting 1 km auto-laps during a half or full marathon helps me figure out the discrepancy between the distance my watch has recorded so far and the actual race distance (based on km markers), so I can plan for the remainder of the race accordingly, so it's kinda useful in a way.
If you always run by feel or are more focused on sharing your activity afterwards, I'm sure it doesn't matter at all.
i kept pressing the lap button on my 945 for this first time custom workout activity i created and then it just ends the entire workout when it was at the very last steps of the created activity without prompting for me to save? anyway you can recover the activity stats that it logged during the workout? has this ever happened to you? next time i know when i get to last step which i created was a cool down with no time limit i can do it as long as i want and when i'm done with that just hit the start/stop button to save the activity instead of the back button (aka lap button for the 945 or 935 garmin watches). anyone know the answer to recover the workout activity let me know???? thanks...
I also find it irritating to accidentally press the lap button instead of thinking that I need to press the back button.
It is kind of stupid to ask why do you need to disable it.
This just a simple feature that can help to improve the user experience.
