Sudden altitude drop during activity

During the activity, which is usually longer, appears a sudden drop or rise in altitude by tens to hundreds of meters.

This error appeared for the first time in software version 11. A problem that has been known for more than a year, and which Garmin unfortunately does not solve as it should. Otherwise, I cannot understand that a multinational company that wants to be a leader in this market segment is not able to remove an ordinary software error.

The only way to avoid this problem is to go back to version 10.

I want to ask when the problem will be solved, or whether it is possible to request a demages when one of the basic functions of the sportster does not work properly?

  • honestly your comment sounds pretty insulting. Have you read through all the other comments and discussions on this forum before providing such poor and useless feedback to the users of the company you represent? Have you at least caught up with before posting this? The original thread about this software issue (which is now locked) has 12000 views and in 8 months Garmin still hasn't been able to provide a decent fix. I can confirm downgrading to 10.40 solves the issues, that should probably be your starting point. Otherwise please just rather follow a policy of silence to deal with it.

  • Hi Garmin-Sierra,

This is from this Saturday... In the end I was running 90 meters below the sea level... and that's wrong for more than 100m. Before the correction, altitude was quite accurate... the "correction" was just wrong, uncalled, not necessary.

This did not happen when I bough the watch, as some others have said before. As downgrading the firmware to version 10.40 solves it (not an acceptable solution for me), seems a software problem.

So the suggestion is to reach my local Garmin Product Support agent, for what? To RMA the unit and getting another one that will exhibit the same behaviour, as others have experienced? Am I at least allowed to upgrade to another model (paying the difference) without this glitch? (it is a rhetorical question, I guess the answer...)

I don't know... just not allowing the altitude "corrections" to happen during an activity would do the trick. Is not the glitch itself what is worrying, is the apparent Garmin inability (willingness?) to solve it what worries me.

       Best,
       Kurt.-

  • All, we are aware of these reports and are actively investigating. I ask that you contact your local  Product Support agent so they can add you to the report with your activity examples and Garmin Folder. This way, you can also be reached out to individually when there is a resolution. I will also update this thread with any updates or fixes. I understand your frustration and apologize for this disruption.

  • Hello everyone,

We have released Public Beta version 12.51 that will include improvements for this disruption. For new reports, please consider enrolling in Beta and test on this new version.

    Public Beta Version 12.51

  • Has altitude improved for those of you who've enrolled in 12.51? Are you still seeing sudden drops?

  • Hi. Updated firmware only installed the other evening (I must have been at the tail end of the roll out) and so far only had one run which didn't exhibit any jumps (Yay!) . So too early to know for sure, but promising. Will report back in a few days

  • my 745 has not updated yet. Automatic update is ON.

  • So far so good:) Too early to conclude, need test more to know.
