Forerunner 745 corrupt activities (.fit files) after 6.20 update

Following an update to 6.20 software on Saturday I’ve had 3 corrupt activities; 2 runs and a walk on my FR745. Prior to this I’ve had no issues whatsoever which makes me believe the update could be the cause. I’ve hard reset the watch today to see if this resolves the issue and reported the problem to Garmin support along with the 3 corrupt files for analysis.

I also see GPS software 5.11 was released last week which my watch upgraded to, and I guess this could potentially be the issue too - spurious GPS data maybe.

Is anyone else experiencing this, or knows if it’s a particular setting causing the issue? Or knows of a confirmed resolution?

  • Took your advice and phoned Garmin for support. The technician said that if software updates happen automatically via Wifi or Connect (Bluetooth) sometimes it can cause a problem and not fully update. This is potentially supported by the Wifi errors in my logs (which I don't understand enough to interpret).

The suggested course of action from Garmin is to install the latest 6.20 using Garmin Express which I am going to try. And then I will disable Auto-updates.

If this works it surprises me that Garmin would even offer auto-updates via Wifi and Connect if they are prone to be brittle; or make the auto-update process more industrial to handle inherently flaky Wifi/Bluetooth wireless connection with MD5 checksums and other clever things.

  • Installed Garmin Express and it says my device is at the latest version (6.20) and there is no way to re-install. I then phoned Garmin back and they suggested I tried Garmin WebUpdater software to re-install; however it too has no way to re-install and just says my device is at the latest version.

I then phoned Garmin back again and they suggested a hard reset, which I am going to try now. And if that doesn't work then they said I need to send the watch in for inspection.

The only other thing I can think of before sending in is upgrading to the latest beta release and then rolling back to 6.20.

Going to try a hard reset now and then delete all FIT files and do my primitive tests again. If this all fails then I will admit defeat and send it in.

  • I'm trying to convince myself that the struggle will prove to be a path of lessor resistance than the exchange process! Joy Hard reset is complete, we shall see.

  • Ok. You were right. I was wrong. I hope you're happy now! Joy Sending the watch in to Garmin. I just did 12x test activities, only 2x were not corrupt and sync'd correctly to Connect and only 6x were saved to my Activity folder, meaning 6x were lost completely. Of the 6x that did save to my Activity folder Garmin Express picked up the 4x which were corrupt and identified them with errors when I tried to sync using Express. So appears this watch is a lemon. For completeness I will post again once I get the watch back from Garmin.

  • Thank you for your encouragement and heartfelt concern! Joy I decided not to do the beta rollback idea in case I ended up making a 'brick' and then the Garmin technicians wouldn't have my current device state with all my failed tests and FIT files to work from. The Garmin technicians (and retailer where I bought the watch) were very surprised I was having issues with a FR745 and said they have had very few returns and none related to corrupt FIT files.

  • Same issue for me.

change my old forunner 735XT with a new 745

Only one activties on my last 5 runs is not corrupted.

It starts last week and i have no idea where it comes from.

    I just contact garmin support...

Never had one issue with my 735xt :(

  • Hi I have tried everything and cannot repair a corrupted fit file that I really want to have uploaded to Garmin connect and Strava.

    Can someone please help me?

    Much appreciated!
