Forerunner 570 screen glitching and going black but staying responsive

Hi everyone,

I’m hoping someone here has experienced something similar or can offer advice.

I’ve been having an issue with my Forerunner 570 where the screen goes glitches and goes black (even when prompted to wake) only when it enters sleep mode. The strange part is that the device still seems responsive - i.e. when I press buttons, I can feel the haptic feedback, so I know it’s registering inputs, but the display remains totally black.

I've contacted Garmin Support, but they’re asking for video proof that the device is still responsive while the screen is black. That’s where I’m stuck: since the haptics don’t make any noise and the screen shows nothing, I’m not sure how to actually prove that it’s working.

I’ve already sent them a folder with info/logs from the device, but they say they can’t move forward without visual proof of the issue (i.e., of the haptics working during the black screen state).

Has anyone else experienced this issue with the 570 (or similar Garmin devices)?

Also, if anyone has any tips on:

  • How to capture proof that the haptics are working when the screen is off
  • Whether this is a known issue with a workaround or fix
  • Any tricks to force the screen back on without a full reboot

…I’d really appreciate the help.

Thanks in advance!

  • Oh my gosh, this just happened to me, too! The only thing I noticed that maybe could be videoed is that there was a very thin white horizontal line that showed briefly on the black screen as I was holding the power button to manually shut it down. It was pretty quick and pretty subtle, but maybe it could be caught on camera. Hopefully you don’t have this problem again, though!

  • This has just happened to me this morning and is what brought me to this thread. I have had the watch for exactly one week. Was working fine when I got in the car...two hours later I check the watch and the screen is dead black, but I can feel the vibrations when I push buttons. No idea what to do.

  • I’m having this same issue right now. I can’t seem to restart the watch either.

  • I’m having this issue right now. Watch was working perfectly fine when I went to bed last night and this morning when my alarm went off, the screen was just black. Tried to restart which was unsuccessful and now as I’m writing the screen turned on from nowhere and is working normally again. So weird. I’ve had the watch for 1,5-2 months.

  • Update: A couple of hours later I was able to hold down the Power Button for 15+ seconds and did manage to get it to restart. I haven't had an issue since.

Also, I somehow managed to start an activity while the screen was black, and because of this thread, managed to take a video where I could push the lap button, and it would announce the lap data on my phone. So I have some kind of video proof of this occurring.

That said, I am now questioning if I should keep it?

  • Same thing happened to me, screen went black but watch was obviously still powered on as the buttons were responsive. Happened right before a run so was particularly  annoying, it eventually came back to life and started working again but now I don't trust it.
