Forerunner 265 Blue Triangle of Death

I have got the Blue Triangle of Death today.  Was scrolling through my morning report and the watch crashed, just showing the blue triangle.  I completed a hard reset (turning phone off by holding the Light button, then turning on by holding the Light, Start/Stop and Back buttons simultaneously, letting go of the Start/Stop button after the first beep, and then letting go of the other two buttons after the second beep), and this allowed me to restart the watch and sync.

However when I tried to go into a suggested run, the watch crashed again.  I got around this the next time I rebooted by ignoring the suggested workout.  This worked for 10 minutes, after which I was in changing a few settings and my watch just froze and I'm back to the start again.

I've contact Garmin support who say that this isn't covered under warranty (basically too bad, so sad!), and my email address has been added to a working list and they'll let me know when the issue is fixed, but there is no timeframe.

I see in previous posts that this issue isn't a new one, with some people reporting it 3 years ago, so basically my £300 watch, which is only 6 months old is useless (just like the customer support I've received!)

**Update**

So I went through the hard reset process again. Got everything set up and then immediately switched off the watch (long hold light button). Left it off for half an hour and then turned it on. Immediately went into a treadmill run and it has let me complete the run (47 mins) so there may be a patch out to fix it. I'll update again if the triangle returns

  • how do you connect to pc?

  • I also got the blue triangle at 5:30am central time. My Garmin will not hard restart on or off the charger. The blue triangle remains on screen or goes off for a few seconds and then comes back. This Garmin is only a few months old. Waiting for support to call, but interesting that so many appear t be having same problem today.

  • Sounds good, but…

I have never (in 13 months of ownership) connected the watch to Garmin Express as I am not a power-user. I have instead relied on the Garmin Connect phone app.

How might I otherwise address the triangle issue?

  • I have the blue triangle of death this morning too! Is this a coincidence? I think not. Working on reboot now.

  • Thank you for your very helpful message. My watch was stuck at the blue triangle. I followed the suggested steps, accepted restoration of back up. My watch appears to be working ok now. Best wishes.

  • Disabling auto-updates did not work, the watch started rebooting as soon as i opened activities - > run and tried to exit the dsw message.

  • Any advice on how to force the connection? I’ve got it plugged into my computer and have been holding the light button for minutes and nothing is happening.

  • It happened to me today around 14 CET time. I did the hard reset. When you do this you have to setup everything again. Once the Bluetooth connection to my iPhone was established I could disable the automatic updates option in the Garmin ConnectIQ App. (just notification will be sent once there is a new update). I do not know where on IOS or on Mac OS you can find the mentioned "Garmin/RemoteSW" directory. So I think as somebody mentioned before it is important to disable the automatic updates for now.

On parallel before I did the hard reset  I found in the Garmin Connect App on my Mac (not iPhone) that there was a backup from some days ago (I did not know that the watch was doing backups once in a while). I told the App to use this backup.

So when I finished the setup on the watch after the hard reset, the watch noticed automatically that a backup to be installed was waiting. I accepted it and the backup was restored. I hope all data and settings (apps and so one) are again on the watch.

I will test the watch in some hours (have an interval training) and check if everything is running again

  • I was able to complete the reset by holding Start/Stop and Back buttons simultaneously, then letting go of the Start/Stop button after the first beep, and then letting go of the other two buttons after the second beep.

  • Garmin's site (as of 10:34 EST) states simply: "We are researching reports of devices displaying a blue triangle when starting a GPS activity. Holding the power button until the unit powers off, then turning it back on may restore functionality temporarily. We will provide more information on a permanent fix when available."

There are two suggested fixes on this thread: 1, to connect to your PC running Garmin Express; and 2, to perform a factory reset.

I have issues with each of these solutions.

I've never seen the need to connect my device to Garmin Express as I've been able to accomplish all that I've need to do either on the watch itself or on the Connect phone app. The device cannot be connected to Garmin Express unless it is operating properly. The alternate solution of a factory reset of the device had me quite concerned about the potential loss of data. I have 13 months of activities recorded and do not wish to lose the information.

Bottom line: IS THERE A FIX, OR ARE WE TO WAIT ON GARMIN TO ADDRESS THE SITUATION? My OCD tendencies are prohibiting me from actually doing any activity without my watch recording the activity.
