255 not recording any elevation

I had a software update a few days ago, but since then my 255 does not record any elevation, whether I'm cycling or walking. I also noticed on Garmin connect that it says my elevation is -1,640ft. I've cleaned the sensors in water, reset the altimeter and barometer, but with no effect. Does anyone have a solution?

  • Ok, I've had no feedback on this issue, so I'll try again.

Whilst I've been waiting for a response from garmin, or anyone else, I've tried to find out if there are any solutions on the internet.  There seems to be a suggestion that pool swimming can affect the elevation readings, from other posts I've seen on the Forerunner 255 forums. I pool swim regularly with my watch, but I don't know why this should be an issue.  The most significant thing I discovered from similar complaints is that others are getting the same readings as my erroneous  -1,640ft. Not sure what is going on there.

I've not had any software updates for over three weeks, so that isn't a solution at the moment.  However, I've reset the altimeter and barometer a few times.  The altimeter has my position above sea level at 129ft, but any activity shows up as -1,640ft.

This issue is starting to make me not like using my watch for cycling and hiking anymore.  Please, does anybody have a solution?

  • I had the same issue last year. My advice is to contact the Garmin Support Center, if the product warranty hasn't expired yet
