Garmin Run Coach (not the garmin coach plans) for a 24hr race

I'm interested in using garmin run coach for ultra distances, but there are no use cases for it online.

The fact it even lets me set it up for a (flat) 24hr race, makes me think it shoulddddd work. Obviously with manual adjustments, cause I'm not doing back to back speed days. Anyway, only seeing a week in advance creates unease, especially not knowing if it's gonna generate proper long runs. I get it's cause it updates based on numerous factors, but why can't the full plan auto-update? Really wish Garmin had better clarity regarding how it works or if it isn't intended for the longer distances.

  • I am currently 6 weeks into 18 week marathon training block, I'm a 2.28 marathoner and the plan has me in a better position at this stage than when I was on track for the 2.28. The long runs while important its the weekly load/volume that makes the difference.
I'd be interested to see how you get on with it, its certainly worth testing.

  • still looking good? I'm only 4 weeks into a 46 week plan (they call it the preparation phase, til 6 months out from the race) so tough for me to say right now. just doing about 60km's a week with the longest having been 1hr53min. it appears to have me on a recovery week which checks out subscribing to the 3 weeks mileage increases, 1 week recovery.

  • Hey Whyte, How is it going since?
I had my first race 8k back 9th of August and it went as expected. I am not sure I will do training according suggested workouts though, I prefer my own structure to weeks etc, it just feels lazy! and if I'm honest I am not as committed for some reason when a watch is telling me instead of myself or human

  • haha i want to be lazy and take the thinking out of it. i thought you were using it for a marathon? I expect it'd work fine for the shorter distances. I'm 10 weeks into mine and it's been fine, but the long run hasn't been more than 2.5 hours, not sure if that's cause it's only in the preparation phase. Expecting it'll bump up when I hit the base phase in December.

  • 8k was part of the plan, also I've noted that if you put a race on the calendar in between the Goal A race, it changes the suggested workouts drastically.
I am using for a marathon at the end of the month, def won't be a PB. I've had 4 2hr plus runs since the beginning of July very sporadic and inconsistent.
Sleep, HRV and training load play huge roles but if you are consistent them the training load will def increase.
