Workout Data Screen - Average Lap Pace instead of Current Pace

How can you change the default workout data screen to show average lap pace instead of current pace? With current pace, I find that it adjusts too often, especially if I am running up or down a hill. With average lap pace (default workout data screen on Forerunner 245), it stayed much more consistent and made up for some sections being run quicker (i.e. running downhill) than others. This made it much more intuitive to hit my planned interval paces.

  • You cannot. Garmin changed the workout data screen pace from average pace to instant pace, because so many people complained about the average pace and wanted it to be changed. Of course, now it's the opposite. Slight smile

  • It would be nice to have the option between the two or set it up so it's customizable like all the other data screens. I think for shorter intervals (200m-400m) the current pace could be helpful, but for longer intervals (800m+) the average pace is definitely easier to train with.

  • I "upgraded" from my 245 to a 955 and was utterly disappointed that the 955 cannot show Average Pace in the Workout data screen. Indeed, if this was customizable it would solve the issue. Otherwise, I need to go back to the 245. Ridiculous!

  • I have found I miss a lot of my 245 options especially during runs or workouts and that the battery life seemed to last longer once it hit “low battery” (less than 10%). One workaround I have found for the lap average pace in workouts is to scroll to another data screen that I have set up and unfortunately, I just no longer put in a goal pace for my intervals.

  • Last year when I upgraded from a FR245 to FR255 I discovered that Garmin had made the Workout screen unusable...

"Instant Pace", whatever the reps distance 200's 400's 800's 1k's - up to 3k's... it's simply junk as during reps workouts I need to hit my "Average" target pace not some nonsense jumping instant number!

Same logic goes for any other distance... I race Mile to Marathons on my Average Target Pace.... can't give 2 flying f* about instant pace as we need to deal with terrain up&down + head/tail wind. (obviously outside reps workout scenario we can simply use lap pace & average pace under a normal screen)

***Workout FIX*** I have been using below for the past year to bypass the Garmin f* up:

-Forget about "Workout" instead add a "New Screen" (run setting, data screens, add new, custom data)

-Select a 4 split screen, than set it up with below data fields (it can also be a 3 split screen if HR recovery isn't needed)

Field1 --> heart rate from Heart Rate Fields (it's you "live" HR bpm's for recovery purpose)

Field2 --> Step Pace from Workout Fields (it's you step average pace)

Field3 --> Step Time from Workout Fields (it's your timer for rest/recovery)

Field4 --> Step duration from Workout Fields (it's the distance duration, it will be driven by the personal workout you're using)

e.g. yesterday I had to complete 400's x10 @3:20/k pace with a recovery of either 123bpm's (my 65% hrmax) or around 1'30sec, whatever the sooner

    1) I started the watch, than waited for external hr strap & gps to pick up

    2) Pressed the mid-left button, training, workouts, than I selected my own 400's workout (you create them in G Connect)

    3) Pressed "Do workout" than simply press "Run" when ready to start the session

    4) a few seconds into the session, I simply scrolled the watch screen to my "customized workout screen" (fields 1 to 4 as above)

Above has been working even smoother than the original Workout screen than I used in my FR245 / FR230

    Hope above helps

PS all my Connect workouts are build using below format:

e.g. for 400's reps --> 12 repeats, Total Distance / RUN 400, Rest / Lap Button press (so I have the flexibility to recover BPM's & Time)
