Garmin Forerunner 255 – GPS Issues

Hi everyone,

I’ve been having trouble with my Forerunner 255’s GPS for the past week. It suddenly stopped finding satellites when starting outdoor activities like running or walking. Until then, it worked perfectly.

I tried restarting the watch, syncing with Garmin Express and Garmin Connect to refresh satellite data. Oddly enough, it worked yesterday and I completed a run. But later in the day, it failed again.

During today’s workout the signal even dropped mid‑activity and hasn’t come back since. Sob

Now, it just keeps searching without locking onto GPS – even after 30 minutes under clear sky. It’s very unreliable and I can’t figure out any pattern. I’ve tried everything except a factory reset.

Anyone else had similar issues? I'm on software version 23.20. Would really appreciate any suggestions!

    I also tried it and so far it seems to be working! Clap

    The watch started connecting to GPS in seconds, just like before! Slight smile Thank you!

    yes. I had the same issue. The "fix" helped litte bit, but not solved the issue. I had still 2 months of warranty on the watch. So I returned it and got back full refund. NOt sure if it was the seller or Garmin. But I am very pleased now. I think now there must be somwthing broken like the hardware or GPS chip

    In the end also mine woraround was not reliable. It heled somethimes. But often the GPS signal was lost during woraround, and I never could be sure it will work.
    I had still some 2 monts of waranty on watch. So I returned it, and got full refund. Not sure if it was the shop or Garmin, or if they even looked at the issue. But of course I am very pleased. And will byu a new watch. Now I think, it had to be some HW issue maybe with GPS itself.

    Since the release 25.06, the GPS is now reliable and the signal is quickly acquired.

    I don't think the latest workaround is related to the fix, since it just started working again for me without doing anything around the date that comment was posted, and has been working great since then.

    It seems someone at Garmin finally found the issue and fixed it. Hopefully it'll stay that way. That was a long 8 months of not having reliable GPS..

    Facing the same issue now for a few weeks. All of a sudden, no GPS while running. In between, hiking in the alps with no problem.

    Even after a reset, the file in the RemoteSW Folder shows 2023. I did sync via bluetooth and cable several times. Is it worth deleting?

    Yes, delete the file in RemoteSW folder and sync via Garmin Express again. Then try searching for GPS.

    Also have you switched the GPS setting on the phone to "Always" (not only when using the Connect app)?
