Sport heart rate zones

Can anyone explain what is there to gain by adding sport specific heart rate zones, instead of just setting the standard ones? I use my Forerunner for running and cycling, should I add both sports? How do the sport specific ones relate to the standard set? Which get updated when e.g. new LTHR is detected? Manual is not super clear on when and why sport heart zones should be used.

I also have an Edge bike computer and a Fenix 6, and in the past I had issues with syncing heart rate zone updates between them when sport specific zones were added.

Thanks in advance!

  • The maximum heart rate you can achieve is different from sport to sport. It is usually higher for running than for bicycling, and higher for bicycling than for swimming. Since the zones are often calculated from max heart rate, it makes sense to have slightly different zones. If you prefer, you can have the same zones for all sports.
