Auto-detect FTP

It's been almost three years since this topic was last posted about so I thought I'd revisit it.

Is the FR255 currently auto-detecting and updating FTP based on completed workouts now?

I understand that FTP testing was never planned to be a feature, but this would be an adequate replacement if it worked.

Cheers for any input

  • Hi. I have the same question. I have the same watch (255 music)

-Installed a power meter and my Garmin auto calculated an FTP a couple days after (without any hard effort). From the Garmin manual they do this calculation based on your VO2, etc (I have lots of running in this watch)

-The auto detect knob doesn't exist in this watch (only max HR and Lactate).

-Today I did a big effort and I got a new record in the 20min average power (from where FTP is taken, by taking the 95%). However I didn't get any FTP update, it still has the initial "estimated" FTP from my first week with the power meter

-I asked Garmin via the support chat and they literally told me they don't know (hehe). After this, I told them if I could send a mail to some technical expert or something. That this type of answer is kinda odd. They closed the chat. Now I'm here in the forums hoping for a better answer

-I know there is an FTP test in "Training", but the question is about auto detect. Not about a manual FTP test

    Maybe  can answer this?

  • I find this really interesting.

My 255 doesn't autodetect my FTP, nor does it have the option to do an FTP test. I'm doing 99% of my workouts on TrainerRoad and the activities are sync'd to my Garmin calendar automatically. My VO2 Max gets updated over time but not my FTP.

It kind of annoys me because if I want to use the Garmin Cycling Coach I'll need to use a ramp test workout I've uploaded to my Garmin Connect and calculate + update the FTP manually to keep my training in the right zones.

Are you using a Garmin Edge/Garmin power meter/Tacx trainer?
