Why does restoring backup after hard reset not restore anything?

Like everyone else I had to do the hard reset because of the boot loop issue that's going on. When I reconnect my phone, the watch prompts me that it found a backup file that was a day old, and I tell it yes to restore using that file. However when all is said and done no settings are restored... I now have to redo the watch face from scratch, reconnect Garmin Pay (just got an email from Bank of America my watch was disconnected), reconnect music, etc. Is that just the way it is? Did I do something wrong? Just bad luck?

EDIT: It looks like some but not all settings did get restored, I just didn't play around enough. Although the watch face changed back to the factory default, once I changed it back to the one I use my custom layout and fields appeared.  I did a run last evening, and the display is my correct one too and it tracks intervals like it is supposed to. Alarms were restored. Things that didn't restore: WiFi, Garmin Pay, Spotify App and playlists/music.

EDIT: Also, I should have gone to DC RainMaker's website for the best info: article link.  He has clear instructions on how to reset phone with a method #4 I could have tried to avoid resetting settings. He also explained the issue, that it was a bad GPS file, and that these get updated almost weekly. This sounds a lot like the great Microsoft Crash of 2024.

  • This is because the backup function in Garmin is useless, at least in this model. First, it always overwrites the previous backup, so you can't restore backups made before the last one. Second, I always have to manually copy the backup file to the "restore" directory, because I don't have such a function in the watch itself. And third, and best of all, the backup is of course deleted with all other data during a hard reset.

I managed the blue triangle quite quickly only because I regularly download the backup file to my computer and I don't have to configure everything from scratch.

  • Hey, I had to do the full reset yesterday and fortunately the backup worked for me, although I had to run it twice or so before it actually restarted the watch and started applying the backup. It restored pretty much everything but my debit card and 3rd party apps with their configuration - it definitely saved the day!

  • How can you do a backup or even restoring your individual settings? I have performed a hard reset yesterday in the evening and now I need to set up my watch from scratch - that`s pretty annoying because I really want my watch back in the exact settings as before....

  • From the owner's manual:

Restoring Your Settings and Data from Garmin Connect
1 From the Garmin Connect app, select .
2 Select Garmin Devices, and select your watch.
3 Select System > Back Up & Restore > Device Backups.
4 Select a backup from the list.
5 Select Restore from Backup > Restore.
    6 Follow the on-screen instructions.
7 Wait for your watch to sync with the app.
8 On your watch, press START, and select .
The watch restarts and restores your settings and data.
    9 Follow the on-screen instructions.

As I said, I had to do this twice, but it worked.

  • Completly useless,  I had yesterday 5x crash, 5 hard resets, 5x manual settings.

  • sounds good basically, which exact settings are exactly stored and backuped?

Watchfaces, Menu settings within the watch, Morning report settings, individal activity settings including data fields?
