Update 21.20 not installing

Hello. My forerunner 255 will not execute the update. It will restart the watch then just go back to the main screen and every hour it vibrates and reprompts to install the update and has been doing so since the update was released.
I’ve tried restarting it, being home with wifi, outside without wifi.

Is there any way I can get this thing to install?

Thanks.

  • I'm curious if this got fixed. If it hasn't then you might check and see if the watch has the update file on it. My thought is maybe it's downloaded the file and it's corrupt so it can't install it.

You can check it if''s on the watch by hooking the watch up to a PC with a USB cable. Connected that way the watch works like a flash drive and you can browse to    \Forerunner 265\Internal Storage\Garmin

if there is the file GUPDATE.GCD  under the Garmin directory, then the I'd consider moving it from the watch (cut and paste) over to the PC. Then use Garmin Express to check for updates. After you disconnect the watch from the PC (post a fresh download of the update) I'd expect the watch to ask if you Want to install the update now or later.

BTW I've moved that file from my watch to my PC a couple of times to keep the watch from installing the update after Garmin Express "conveniently" put the update on my watch regardless that I have automatic updates turned off. I did not have any negative consequences from removing the file.

Manual installs of updates can be done by.

Hold the left middle button (the up button)

When the menu comes up, release the button and then push the up button again.

That should put you on the "System" choice, (select it with the right, top button)

Once the System menu is up, press the up button two more times and that should put you on the Software Update option. Selecting software updates is where you can choose to turn automatic updates off, or manually request an install.

If the GUPDATE.GCD file wasn't on your watch, and / or manually requesting the update doesn't fix your problem, I'd be contacting Garmin support.

Please keep in mind I'm not a Garmin support, problem, this is just what I'd be doing for myself.

And I just remembered, something I haven't personally tried but have read about in another forum post by oBUTTuSo.

The below is apparently to try and reinstall a software update, that didn't install correctly. Again, nothing I've personally done but I'd guess that only works if the software update is already on the watch and if it's not a corrupt file. Maybe a Garmin person will chime in and clarify that.

That post says to Go To:

Settings (hold the middle left "up" button

Release and press the middle left "up" button again.

That should take you to System. Select System using the top right button, then press the middle left "up" button again.

That should take you to "about"

Press the light button (top left) 8 times and select reinstall.

  • You’re a legend! Thanks so much for taking the time to write this

  • I hope something in the content helps. Like I tired to say, I'm not a Garmin support guy. Either way though, if it helps or doesn't help update this so folks who might be interested and I will know. You might already be saying it helped based on your reply but you might just be happy that you got some feedback, hard to be sure. Thanks.
