Track run calibration

Hello, I have a question about the track run calibration.

The instruction says that you are supposed to run 4 loops on the same track. Do they need to be tracked as an separate activity? What If I ran 40 minutes on my first track run without saving the 4 loops separately, do I need to recalibrate?

I had the impression that the auto lap had slightly different distance on each loop, is it normal or should it be spot on?  I ran on track 3 (which I choose in the settings) but each lap is still recorded as 400m, I have no idea how does that work and if I've calibrated it correctly.

No.  As long as you recorded the run with the Track Run activity, the calibration will be automatically generated once the watch has finished the calibration within the activity.

The 1st few laps may be a bit off during the initial calibration process, but after that every 400m should be within a few feet.

  • Ok thats great, thanks
One more question, I ran with a time structured training loaded from TrainingPeaks, which ended a lap after 10min (warmup) in the middle of the actual lap as you can see in the screenshot, it shouldn't have messed anything up right? Might be a dumb question but i'd rather be sure because it was kind of a test run. The distance and pace in the run overall seems ok

  • it shouldn't have messed anything up right?

Probably not.  I usually see the calibration phase completed after a 2ish laps.  You can see if the calibration actually happened by looking at the recorded trace in Garmin Connect (web is easier to see) where there will be a few wobbly laps then the rest of the run should be right on the lap you were running.  Below is example of one of my track workouts where you can see that the trace is a bit wobbly then the rest of the run snaps in nicely.  You also might be running on a track that is in Garmin's track database and in that case there is not calibration required.  I jumped on Harvard's track for the 1st time a couple weeks ago and it didn't require any calibration.

  • Just noticed there is a map with each lap marked, It seems that the lap is constantly shorter, but the laps are marked as 400m, and I ran on track 3 which is slightly further so I think thats ok (the big differences like between 3 and 4 are the laps that ended because of the warmup time)

Yep.  If you'd been running in lane 1, the laps (assuming the autolap is set to 400m) would have been right on top of each other.

  • Yeah, thanks for the help!
