Vo2 Max is not working properly in new device

Hi everyone,

I had a Vivoactive 4 that upgraded recently to a FR 255 Music. Everything is working great except for the Vo2 Max calculation. I have been using the watch during 2 weeks, had a few runs that according to the manual must calculate or update the Vo2 Max value. But the last value in the chart is from 4 weeks ago, when i was still using the Vivoactive 4.

The main problem with this is that others functions of the watch depends on this value. Like training status, LTHR calculations, race predictors, DSW, etc.

The runs are outdoor with GPS in a flat surface, HR is 70% or higher for more than 10 min continuous, HR is recorded using a Polar H9 Chest Strap BT, the weight value is updated. The device is also configured as the main training and wearable device. I removed the VA 4 from my Garmin account.

I don't know if there is something wrong with the watch. According to my max HR of 201 bpm, the 70% is about 141 bpm.

Current Vo2 Max at 18/10/2024, from almost 1 month ago

And these are some of the runs that i made during this week

The device is using the latest firmware available, 20.32. Any help is welcome

Thanks in advance,

Daniel

  • Since firm 20.32 im seeing a decrease in vo2max,  its strange because last updates the vo2max is increasing and decreasing very rare...anyone more?

  • Today i did the LT Guided Test, and after 28 min it ended with a message saying "Lactate Threshold not detected". Is a bit frustrating, the Vo2 value was not updated as well.

My max hr is 201, the 70% is about 141 bpm. The run was 20 min continuous over 141 bpm. The chest strap is in good condition, the batteries are full, the current max hr was recorded in a field test, not using some formula.

I did a soft reset yesterday as well to discard problems with the watch

Any other recommendation or tips are welcome

You checked all the boxes to get a VO2 Max. The last thing you could consider is to reset the watch to factory settings, but not reconnect it to your phone or to Wifi until you have completed a new qualified run. The idea is to isolate the watch from (unlikely but) possible synchronization issues.

If the watch gives you a VO2 Max estimate, you can reconnect the watch. If it doesn't or stops changing the number (as seen on the watch graph or runalize), you will have to contact Garmin Support.

  • Hi Etupes25,

I'll try this during the next week. It's a pain to do a factory reset but I think is the last resource. Maybe it's confused with the old device configuration.

I'll come back later with the results

    Thanks

  • in my experiencie, sometimes i need to do a reset to defaults, and its helps with firmware updates, indeed one time i needed to delete all and reset to default 2 times until the update of the firmware was stable...

  • with the new backup feature in the watch its very easy to reset to defaults, just sync the device with the watch, make a backup in the watch, and the reset to defaults, then remove the watch from your phone BT and from your garmin connect app, and then sync again. i did multiple times because of the issues in the firmware updates, then with the backup app, you can restore everything as before

  • are you 100 percent positive these HR readings are correct? i mean you said you were not doing much of cardio stuff and yet you hit 201 bpms? this is crazy high beeps i think? never seen myself going over 185 at best. I had faulty hr strap in past showing some 2xx bpms too. I get that we are all different, but that would be one thing to check. another is your max hr setting: drop it to what you think is lower than you really can do and let your watch auto detect it again. maybe this way you can also auto detect lthr, happened to me. see then where you are with your max hr/lthr

  • Finally, the first run after the factory reset did it. As explained by Etupes25 i did a factory reset and made a run without connecting the watch to my phone or Garmin connect. Once the run ended and the Vo2 Max value was calculated I connected the watch to the app, and the value synced ok.

I'm only worried that after the sync it may broke again. It also calculated the LTHR correctly this time with the same run.

Later during this week I'll make an update to see if it continues updating the values after the connection to the Garmin app

Thanks to all who took the time to answer my questions

  • dont be worry its happens sometimes,
