Serious Steps problems after installing update 20.32

Forerunner 255

After upgrading from 20.31 to 20.32, sometimes when I walk a few dozen steps, the step count doesn't update, and then I sit down and wait for a long time before it suddenly changes.
And during the walking process, the step count is jumping and suddenly increases by a dozen steps.
Sometimes it doesn't update even after a few steps.
In the past, the number of steps has been changing continuously, and after upgrading from 20.31 to 20.32, it is not normal.
Tried restoring factory settings and that didn't work either.

it is annoying.

I want to down grade to 20.31, but i could not find a way to do that.

  • i want to upload a video, but i do not know how to do it.

    i recorded a video.

    15:30:05  steps 4272

i walked for 30 seconds and stopped at 15:30:35.  it is still steps 4272

    15:31:05 steps jumps from 4272 to 4315

I do not know how it worked previously on FR255, but the way you describe is the way how it is designed to work, and how it always worked on other models too. The purpose of the delayed incrementing of the steps is to avoid counting random isolated accidental arm or wrist movements, or bumps (i.e. in the car) as steps. Only when the watch detects a regular pattern corresponding to walking or running, it starts incrementing the counter. And for doing so, there must be around a dozen or two of steps, before the pattern is recognized and confirmed. And it counts also the steps backwards, from the beginning of the detected period, and that's why the displayed number can suddenly jump by several steps at once. On all Garmin watches I ever tested, it always worked in this way.

  • Thank you for your answer.

i do not remember clearly how the steps update before 20.32.
I used to think that the steps update timely and continuously (similar to the seconds changes), instead of waiting for up to 1  minute to update (to jump the steps).

I recorded several videos over and over again and observed that the step count is only updated within the first 5 seconds of each minute for steps taken during the previous minute.
For example, if you walk for 15 seconds from 0 - 15 seconds in the previous minute and then sit still, the step count does not update at that time, and it waits for the first five seconds of the next minute to start to update, which means you need to wait for 45-50 seconds for the update to happen, which is too much of a lag!

For example, if I walk from 5 seconds to 60 seconds, that's 70 meters before the steps update.
And it takes a minute for the count to update once even if I keep walking for several minutes, which I don't remember the same delay from previous versions.

Do the steps on your Garmin watch only update once (jump once) every minute even you keep walking?

It is update continuously, so i call it jump.

    I understand this design.
My problem is that when walking is detected and ongoing, it's also still only updating the step count once a minute, not continuously.

When the working pattern is recognized and it is continuously working,  shouldn't the steps update timely?  instead of update once a minute.

I was under the impression that with the previous version, I would get up and take a few steps and sit down, and the step count would update right away, rather than needing to wait until the start of the next minute for it to update.

  • Do the steps on your Garmin watch only update once (jump once) every minute even you keep walking?

It depends. Most watchfaces refresh each second only during a limited time of 20-30s after waking up the watchface, and then return back to the power-saving mode refreshing only at the full minute. So the effect you see, is expected.

If you want to see the step counter increasing continuously, then you have several options:

    • Open the Steps widget
    • Start an activity and let it run in the background
    • Wake up the watch each ~20-30s with the brisk wrist gesture, or by pushing a button (i.e. the Light button)

Keep on mind, that the Step widget times out after 2 minutes, and returns back to the main watchface. If you want to keep it on continuously for a longer time, again you can start an activity in the background.

At least so it works on the watches I tested, and as far as I know from the feedback on this forum, it works in the same way on other models as well, so I assume the same functionality on your FR255 too.

  • I think After updates to 20.32, i do not see " refresh each second only during a limited time of 20-30s after waking up the watchface"
I think steps might refresh second on previous firmware. I could not remember clearly.

Forerunner 255 is MIP, not amoled screen.
The garmin officical watch dials have seconds to refresh every second.
But the steps on garmin official watch refresh every minute is not what i want.

I just wish to have a chance to try previous firmware to see it works better.
but i could not down grade.

I searched on website and could not find a way to down grade to previous firmware.

  • Forerunner 255 is MIP, not amoled screen.

Watches with MIP displays refresh the seconds only for a limited time of 20-30s too. It helps saving some energy, because the MIP display (unlike AMOLED) consumes energy when changing the state, while it draws just a negligible amount of energy when static (regardless whether dark or light). Besides saving on the refreshing of the display, it also saves energy on lower CPU processing.

  • i just tried "Open the Steps widget".

I could not refresh every second.

  • Try starting an activity (i.e. Cardio) and let it run in the background
