VO2Max

Hello all, i have the forerunner 255 since November 2023, since the beginning i got an estimated vo2max, since then the vo2max no change, i do every week quality training, tempo, sprints, etc so i guessed something wasnt right, i buyed a chest heart strap and since then my lactate threshold and my vo2max is improving, why this happens? i mean i have seen a lot of review speakind very good about the precision of the optical heart rate of this watch, but looks like this was not getting enough info to modify lactate threshold, or v2omax? thanks in advance

  • I get frequent changes in my VO2Max from runs without my chest strap. Usually the changes are something like 0.1-0.2, so the reported figure can be the same as before. But I can tell from the graph that it is slightly changed. Today it was enough to change from 51 to 52. In reality something like 51.4 to 51.6.

  • I got the watch in November, the first running days have me a 52 Vo2Max since then till 2 weeks ago the Vo2Max has had no change, 2 weeks ago I buyed a chest strap and it started to let me new lactate threshold almost every week and the Vo2Max too, now I'm 53 vo2max and improving ascending, it's strange it's like the watch doesn't collect enough data in the optical sensor? I wear it as recommended 3 CMS from the wrist bone

  • I dont think you get Lactate threshold updates from the watch but VO2max for sure you do.  I ran mine without a chest strap for near a year and it goes an estimate and updated pretty much every run.

Remember VO2max changes very slowly.  It can take weeks to move it by 0.1.

LTHR detection i find varies wildly on the chest strap depending what exercise and intensity im doing that particular time.  I see a 12bpm difference between the highest and lowest and it fluctuates wildly, sometimes several times a week.

  • Its strange, I don't think my unit is defected, I reset to defaults and all data 2 weeks ago before the chest strap, i don't know why with chest strap the Vo2Max is improving since the beginning and with the watch was stuck 6 months, almost with the same trainings

  • And you were running outside with GPS? Are you looking only at the VO2Max number, or are you looking at the graph where you can see a change of 0.1?

  • OHRS (and GNSS) gets enough data to predicate VO2max, but you need to use a chest stripe to get LTHR and LTP.

  • Yes always running with GPS and outside, this is why I felt rare the situation, today I did a short run of 8km steady run, without chest strap and looks like the last firmware 19.18 changed something, because the Vo2Max is improving climbing also with only the watch out, I look in the watch in the graphics because the app is not precise like the watch
