Zone 5 Adjusted - Lower Compared to other people

Hi, Everyone

I am quite new here, I just have a quick question about Garmin, I can see that it keeps lowering down my zone 5 based on my daily activities.

Now, my zone 5 is at >167BPM, for context, I am 30 years old, male. 173cm, 29Kg, I run 6x a week and is preparing for a sub4 hour marathon.

I hope to hear your insights whether it is good or bad?

Thank you

  • Heart rate is not comparable between people. It can vary a lot. Your zones are probably based on max HR, which the watch can estimate based on your workouts, Yours is most likely 186, which is normal for your age.

  • Hi, first of all if you have a new watch consider it needs some running sessions in different condition/effort levels to estimate your hr zones/vo2 max, and a chest strap can help for lactate threshold (LT) test and better accuracy during sprint/intense sessions. I assume that if you're running 6x week you know the effect of zone 2 and LT runs on your body. If you have a chest strap, could be useful to set the hr zones based on %LT and run a couple test (not the same day), and see if the result suits more your performance, like the pace of your zone 2 or zone 4 knowing your 10k PB.

As, said , every hr is on our own, but you can have an idea of how does training affect your hr usually. If you try a lactate threshold test the result is usually the upper limit of zone 4, and you can train that, or take into consideration the max pace you can run a 10k race.

I'm around your age, my LT and get higher with training, but that's also based on what you're training, if it's zone 2 you may be lacking z4 or vo2 max but that's ok, if it's not your actual goal.

    Secondly, 29kg ..?.

  • Thank you both @ovekvam @ben for the inputs, I meant 69kg***, that's a typo.

I usually train zone 2-3, 4x a week with LSDs on Sundays, and speed intervals 2x a week. I will try and buy the chest strap

  • Hi Juan,

try to reset your HR zones (for a run) once a week. Garmin calculates your max HR based on your condition and it can vary. Somehow Garmin doesn't do it right. Manually resetting helps.

And yes, %LTHR based zones are better, but you need a chest strap to get your value, as mentioned above..
