FR 255 Unexpected shutdown, unable to power back on

Hi,

My FR255 is a few months old and has been working well.

In the past week, the watch has shutdown without notice.

Yesterday on a run the watch shutdown and I was able to restart it.

Today at some unknown time the watch shutdown and I am now unable to start it or charge it.

I am using the official Garmin charging cable and the contacts are clean.

There should already be power in the battery as it is only 2-3 days since the last full charge.

Currently the FR 255 is on firmware 18.23.

Is anyone having similar issues and if so have you resolved them?

Best regards,

Brian

  • I'm very sorry to read this! Please try the following steps if you have access to a computer:

    1. Plug the cable into the back of the watch.

    2. Plug the USB end into the computer while holding the power button (upper left) down for 30-40 seconds. If the watch's screen lights up, let go.

    3. Release the power button.

    4. Give it a few moments and see if the display lights up.

If your device still won't power on, please contact your local Garmin Product Support center directly.

Apologies for the long delay in answering this, I missed this message.

Anyhow I managed somehow to power on the Forerunner 255 and all was OK for a few weeks.

But in the past two weeks the watch has - during a scheduled run workout - skipped laps.(as if the lap button has been pressed)

And in the past 5 days has powered off 3-4 times. In the 2-3 first to cases I managed to restart the watch by using the method that you outlined above.

After the second shutdown I thought that the issue may not exist in the latest firmware so I upgraded to 19.18 and the following day the watch powered down, but this time I cannot power it on.

The shutdowns have occurred at night while sleeping, (in sleep mode), during the day while using the FR255 as a  (smart)watch and even while recording an activity.

I am using the Garmin supplied power cable to connect to the laptop.

When the watch is powered on, there has been a high percentage of battery available.

    Best Regards,

    Brian

  • Might want to try a factory reset, can't hurt to try

  • Thanks for your suggestion, I was reluctant to try it as I was concerned about losing recorded information. Scream

Spoke with Garmin product support and they asked for a factory reset.

Pressing the power, start and lap buttons and waiting for the beep did power on the watch.

At first look the factory reset does not seem to bad, only need to add sensors I think, but will check.

This watch powering down is still a possible issue, but the support team appear to have a solution to that.
