lactate threshold auto detection?

Hello, I have been getting LT auto detected on my watch (instict 2) but my missus hasn't got one yet on her FR255 - and cannot really figure out why. We both use Garmin's HRM so it should happen vs setting on her watch. Not talking about test, just detection during regular exercise.
I could attribute it to different types of runs we do, but wanted to confirm - do people get LT auto-detected on this watch w/ current software? TIA

I’ve got the 255s.  I have auto detection on.  My watch had detected it last June (2023).  It has not changed since.  I’ve done a lot of different runs, I’ve manually lowered the lactate heart rate in the hopes of it updating itself and nothing ever changes.

  • I run with a FR255 and a Polar H10 chest strap, LT auto detection ON, my watch finds LT variation frequently, with 4 runs a week I could have 1 or 2 small variation, be it in heart rate/watts/pace ...sometimes can take longer as couple weeks to see some changes.

Are you sure the chest strap is connected? I read that if the workout is too light (zone1) it's harder to get some changes

  • Thanks, yes, she's just started running sprint intervals so maybe this way something will get detected; I myself get reading mostly when I push myself proper, so maybe that's the reason she has not got it yet. Was just wondering if this is software glitch/forerunner thing - but if you get it - we'll patiently wait hoping to see it too

  • Might depend on the type of exercise - i dont think sprints will trigger it due to the time spent at or above.

That said, auto detect is on for mine but its useless - it detects a new threshold that varies hugely depending on the exact type and intensity of run ive done.

I get 174 - 181 at random detected most weeks so its not that useful.  (Real figure from Friel etc tests seems to be about 180).

  • But I think the threshold is not constant in real life either. It can vary from day to day, depending on the workouts you did the days before, and how well rested you are.

  • I never had this issue with my polar H10 + fr255, maybe is the chest strap software not up to date or the battery low? Max detection difference for me was like 2bpm or few seconds , couple watts, I can only share my experience of wearing a chest strap for 5 months, let's hope the new update of the fr255, coming soon, will fix this!
