Unsure if Max HR Detection is functioning properly.

I've recently conducted a Lactate Threshold Guided Test and received a result of 170bpm. On completion of the test and after stoping the workout, I received an updated Max HR of 200bpm. The previous figure was 189bpm.

I assumed this was a bug and reset my HR Max to 189bpm. After another short run the next day of roughly 30min with a Max HR of 151bpm on the run, the watch then updated the Max HR to 200bpm again.

I'm curious, since I didn't reach 200bpm during the test (or any workout for that matter), is the Auto Max HR Detection calculating this result based on what the watch assumes I am capable of achieving, or is the Auto Max HR meant to be derived from the absolute max HR detected during workouts.

I'm currently training using the Daily Suggested Workouts (which I've selected to be based on HR), and not being sure whether my Max HR is even correct is a bit disheartening.

Any help with this issue would be great!

  • The watch estimates what it thinks you should be able to reach as a maximum heart rate. Many Garmin owners think the estimate is on the high side. If you want to keep a slightly lower value, you can edit it and then disable max HR detection.

  • My experience is that the Garmin number seems a bit high.

After I run it auto-detects my max HR as 171.

If I went by the age formula it would be 155, I realise this isn't accurate.

If I look at my max HR with a chest HR monitor, on a run the most I can get it to is in the 130s. Doing a Garmin Lactate Threshold Test my average HR was 125 and max was 139. From my point of view this was maximum effort.  I was very frustrated that the test failed because based on the Garmin detected max HR, I was unable to reach the highest HR zones.

  • I assume you are... No, there is not enough data you provided here. Age, physical form, etc, that all impact your max HR. But if you have done a LTHR test, you can simply set your HR zones on %LTHR and do not worry  about your maxHR. I get every week an neu max HR/LTHR - by running threshold exercise or sprints and the data seems to be OK.

  • The Garmin LHTR test didn't detect my LTHR .. and looking at the data afterwards, that was because my HR didn't go high enough at the end of the test.  The max HR Garmin has calculated isn't realistic.   I'm going to have to set my max HR lower manually and redo the test.
