Is it normal for heart rate reading to max out during a workout?

Hi all,

Is it normal for the heart rate reading on the Forerunner to max out during a workout?

A couple of times now, once during a long run outside and once during a 90 minute stationary bike workout, my heart rate is showing on screen as maxing out. It gradually goes up and up until it maxes out fully.

If I take the watch off, give the sensor area a wipe, then put it back on, my heart rate then shows about 70 BPM, and then I have to really run/pedal fast before it starts going back up again.

Has anyone else experienced this? I wouldn't have thought a bit of sweat on my wrist would have caused a sensor on a dedicated running watch to start giving maxed out heart rate readings.
